In a world of Encores doing more well-known shows (i.e., Once Upon A Mattress and Into the Woods), I long for the quieter shows of yesteryear! Shows like High Spirits is such a welcome addition to any season!

Show: High Spirits
Songs: “Was She Prettier Than I?” & “I Know Your Heart” & “The Bicycle Song” & “Where Is The Girl I Married?” & “You’d Better Love Me”

High Spirits is a musical with a book, lyrics, and music by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, based on the play Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward, about a man coping with the ghost of his dead wife. Martin and Gray adhered closely to Coward's original text, while expanding the medium's character to the star role, initially calling the show Faster Than Sound. The playwright was delighted with their adaptation and agreed to direct it himself. The musical opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on April 7, 1964, and closed on February 27, 1965, after 14 previews and 375 regular performances. Gower Champion aided Coward in directing the musical

New York City Center presented a concert staging of High Spirits for its Encores! series in February 2026, starring Tony winner Katrina Lenk (Company, The Band's Visit) as Elvira, real-life husband-and-wife Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) and Steven Pasquale (The Bridges of Madison County) as Ruth and Charles Condomine, Tony winner Andrea Martin (McNeal) as Madame Arcati, Rachel Dratch (POTUS, SNL) as Edith, Campbell Scott (House of Cards) as Dr. Bradman, and Jennifer Sánchez (Real Women Have Curves) as Mrs. Bradman. Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo) directed and Ellenore Scott choreographed, with musical director Mary-Mitchell Campbell leading The Encores! Orchestra. The ensemble included Brandon Block, Delphi Borich, Marcus Byers Jr., DeMarius R. Copes, Deanna Cudjoe, Lili Froehelich, Katie Griffith, Benjamin Howes, Caroline Kane, Ross Lekites, Devon McCleskey, Michael Pesko, Jeremiah Valentino Porter, Sean Stack, Halli Toland, Kamille Upshaw, and Kristin Yancy.
