First up for today is: Lil Palser Barto @lilpalserbarto ❤️‍🔥 Lil Palser Barto (b.1994) creates luscious paintings and drawings that delve into the dissolution of gender binaries, exploring themes of genetic manipulation, identity, and the interplay between natural and technological realms. Barto’s surreal works underscore the transformative potential of speculative fiction to challenge and redefine societal norms. Lil’s works unfold like surreal dreams where flesh and cosmos blur into a fluid abstract landscape, not clear if we are inside a body or in a distant interplanetary world. Drawing on the queer cyborg where gender binaries dissolve and human and machine intermesh in glorious corporality, as much as gamer boy aesthetics, eroticised sci-fi art of the 1970s, and science fiction cinema, her works pave a new aesthetic terrain. Growing up in the Northern Rivers, surrounded by Nimbin hippy culture and the psychedelic visions of ethnobotany, Barto’s otherworldly works exude a transcendental quality, though rooted in the raw and elemental nature of the body.
