Episode 12: How to Prepare to Speak at Women's Event: Practical Tips for Bible Teachers
Before Kelly or Lindsay teach anywhere, they asks the event leader questions like these:

👉 Who’s usually in the room?
👉 Are your women studying something together right now?
👉 Whose teaching are they listening to, like podcasts, Bible reading plans or authors?
👉 What struggles or questions keep coming up?

The answers can be surprising. One church was full of young families walking through miscarriage and infertility. Another was mostly empty nesters wondering what comes next. One group had just finished a study on John, and Lindsay had built every message from John without knowing it.

Knowing who she’s teaching does more than help her prepare. It shapes how she prays. After months of praying for a group of women, she’s thinking less about how she’ll do and more about how much she wants them to know Jesus. That takes a lot of pressure off.

It’s easy to think of teaching as one-way: you have the Bible and a message, and you deliver it. But teaching always involves two groups, the person teaching and the people listening, and both of them shape the message.

That’s one reason prayer matters so much in preparing to teach. Praying for your listeners keeps them in mind the whole time you’re getting ready. Teaching is a gift meant to serve the church, not a performance.

When nerves kick in, it’s tempting to focus on giving a polished talk because that feels like something you can control. But changing hearts isn’t your job. God does that. Your job is to point people to Jesus and to care about the people in front of you. That’s freeing.

Hi, I’m Kelly!

I love Jesus more than anything. I love His Word and helping people learn to read it for themselves.

Whether you’re new here, you’ve been around for awhile, or you’ve randomly found my page, allow me to introduce myself.

I’ve been married for 20 years to Jimmy, and there is not a day that goes by that he’s not making me laugh.

We have 5 kids, two adopted from India, ranging from teenager to toddler. So our days are full!

Things you’ll see me talking about:
-Studying the Bible
-The hard, confusing, and controversial stuff
-Honest friendship and conflict
-Helping women to teach the Bible
-Detaching our purpose from our activity

Most of my days are filled with laundry, carpools, and homework, and my goal is to keep it real here.

Episode 12: How to Prepare to Speak at Women's Event: Practical Tips for Bible Teachers - You said yes to teaching. What comes next? Kelly says one of her first steps is to set up a call with the event leader and ask about the event and about the women who will be there.

When you teach at another church, you’re partnering with the leaders there. They know these women far better than you do. Kelly asks about ages, life stages and what the church has been through recently. She once found out that a church was still grieving its pastor’s death several years earlier. She wasn’t teaching on grief, but knowing it helped her handle God’s Word gently with women whose hearts were still tender.

Teaching well starts with knowing who you’re teaching.

When your primary motive is through the lens of self-forgetfulness, you are able to better care for the people you are teaching.

You are not there with the responsibility to change anyone’s heart because you cannot do that. You just need to show up and talk about Jesus and His Word.

When we think about teaching, we tend to think of a pastor preaching on Sunday morning or a speaker at a women’s conference... but there are actually many more needs and opportunities for teaching in your local church!

There is a need in:
– Small groups
– Kids' ministry
– Youth ministry
– Counseling
– Care ministries
– Everyday discipleship moments

Teaching is actually a responsibility of the whole church body. When men and women step into teaching roles—especially in the less visible places—it strengthens the body as a whole. We need more people helping the church see God’s Word and how it applies to our lives.
