Go, go, go Jo! 🌈💜
Wow, what a night we had at the @wyverntheatre on Saturday!

Our Esprit students were invited to be the Dreamcoats Choir for the Swindon performance of Dreamcoat Stars, the professional UK touring concert produced by MK Entertainment Ltd, and they were absolutely amazing.

They took the whole experience in their stride. Rehearsing with the professional cast and team, learning how everything works backstage and then stepping out onto that stage and giving it everything. They were focused, confident and so professional, and we couldn’t have been prouder watching them.

We feel incredibly lucky to be able to give our students opportunities like this, but even prouder that professional productions trust our young performers to come in, work hard and be part of the team. That means a lot to us.

A massive thank you to the whole Dreamcoat Stars team for inviting us to be part of such a brilliant show, and well done to every single one of our Esprit kids. What a night! 💜🌈

A little behind-the-scenes look at our Frozen JR tech rehearsals ❄️🎭

Tech is such a huge part of putting on a show like this, and there is so much happening that the audience never really gets to see.
This video captures some of that process: giving notes and direction, working through microphone teching, adjusting dance blocking for the stage, rehearsing quick changes, practising special effects and making sure everyone knows exactly where they need to be and when.

It’s also the point where we finally start seeing all the different parts of the production come together in the theatre.

The children worked incredibly hard throughout the whole process, taking on notes, adapting quickly and learning just how much teamwork goes into making a big production happen.

A massive thank you to Galina for filming and putting this together. It’s such a lovely glimpse into everything that happens behind the scenes, and such a special memory for us all to have and look back on!

WAR HORSE (NATIONAL THEATRE)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There are plays that deserve to be revived over and over again; War Horse is certainly one of them. Almost two decades on from its first staging at the National’s Olivier theatre, this stunning adaptation of Michael Murpurgo’s wartime novel has returned home triumphant again.

Adapted for stage by Nick Stafford, in tandem with Katie Henry’s direction, it is a show that touches upon familiar themes; courage, friendship, loyalty and, above all, the futility of war. The close bond between Albert (played by Tom Sturgess) and Joey is palpable and will strike a chord with anyone who has ever loved or been loved by an animal.

Joey is portrayed by a masterful team of puppeteers. The grace with which they move around the vast thrust stage is subtle yet so precise, but when the horse is seen galloping or even charging, it is as if the audience is witnessing a real-life equine at full-pelt.

Adrian Kohler’s puppet design is striking, complemented by Rae Smith’s emotive set; minimalist at first glance but featuring a screen in the shape of the fragment of a torn page. In this, we see the best of nature and the worst of humanity reflected back toward us.

War Horse is undoubtedly a tearjerker and, 19 years on from its debut, is still leaving audiences emotionally exhausted by the end. The bond between Albert and Joey is deeply moving but its genius is in how it expands beyond that relationship.

Joey, and fellow cavalry horse Topthorn, meet many different men and women on their journey. Some treat them with respect and kindness, others less so. But it is those moments of hope, understanding and kinship that shine so brightly in this production.

War Horse is just as magical and inspiring as it ever was. Rightly, the focus of the piece is on the unique bond between man and beast but the play also delicately explores human connections within families and friends, thrown together by the worst of circumstances.

Happy day of puppets to all who chose this weird little life! These are a collection of puppets I’ve either made or worked with (not to be confused with the human beings I’ve also had the joy of working with but definitely didn’t make)!

So proud of our Esprit students for performing on stage at the @wyverntheatre with @vanouten_denise on Tuesday evening!
They conducted themselves so professionally, performed brilliantly and completely rose to the occasion. For so many of them, this was a first taste of what it feels like to be in a professional theatre environment and they did themselves proud from start to finish.

Experiences like this are so special. Not just because of the performance itself, but because of everything that comes with it: the excitement, the nerves, the teamwork and the confidence that grows from stepping out on stage in front of hundreds of people.

A really brilliant night, and one they should all be very proud of. 💜
