Last Sunday I performed my first showcase for guests, friends, and my wife! It was a collection of group pieces and personal choreographies; a culmination of 3 months of athletic training, rehearsals, and growth as a person, dancer, and in community. While it was the cap of our dance intensive, I know much more had happened than what was shown, and it was an experience to carry foward in my growth and exploration as a dancer. From legends in our dance community to my newest friends from dance fundamentals, I loved it so much seeing you all there.

What didn't get specifically shown? The times we doubted, the aches and sweat of training and rehearsals, the waves of life events pressuring us to give up, the way we stood our ground, the vulnerability we gave each other, the challenge, encouragement, and care Niecey and Migs cultivated, the stories of firsts and overcoming, and the moments our families and friends were there for us. Something like this was may more than the showcase. With the aftershow comments shared with me though, I think we all felt the inspiration, joy, and love that went into this experience. Something communicated beyond just the show and I loved that.

I'm pretty stunned now that it's over, but something happend the other night later in a house session, a seemingly small thing. A friend remarked on how quickly a picked up a new step. I sat in my car ready to discredit myself, but I teared up out of thankfulness. I am not the same dancer, maybe even person, from when I started Camp, and my showcase keeps going.

Last night we were taught by two very special guests:
@castroreg and @rashaad.hasani

We cannot overstate how valuable these two people are to the dance community.
Their ability to impart knowledge and share context behind these traditional Black American art forms is rare.

It’s tough condensing 12 weeks of work down to 60 seconds, but here’s a recap of the first iteration of The Camp 🏕 Training Intensive.

We were fortunate to work with this amazing group of people for 12 weeks. Big thank you to @kristinakoumaeva for guest instructing. We can’t wait to introduce more guest instructors next season.

We met twice a week, built strong dance and athletic foundations, and made some great friends along the way ❤️.
