Solo Leveling.

Pain may bring me down.

But cognitive decisions shape how I practice to level up.

I once heard Chris Rock joke about how people with the most shit sometimes have to shut up, while people with the least shit have the most shit to say.

So maybe parkour works the same way.

If you want to level up, sometimes you need to shut up and practice.

Not necessarily in silence.

Just without someone else’s answers filling in the blanks.

No copying moves.

No waiting for someone to show me how.

No partner doing the thinking for me.

When I practice alone, I have to turn on every sensor I have and connect everything mentally:

What do I feel?
Where am I going?
What is the environment doing?
What can I change?

The goal isn’t to be perfect.

It’s to imagine something from nothing to something.

That’s why boring practice matters.

Repeating the same movement.

Watching the same video again and again.

Trying something inefficient.

Looking stupid.

Trying again.

At first, every little part of the movement demands attention.

With repetition, some of those details become easier to manage, leaving more mental space for the variables that still matter.

And that’s where solo practice gets interesting.

But training with others has a completely different value.

A partner can bring more information into the movement—another pair of eyes, another interpretation, another detail you simply couldn’t see by yourself.

So I don’t think solo practice and partner practice compete.

They solve different problems.

Solo practice asks:
Can I find the answer?

Partner practice asks:
What am I still missing?

Maybe that’s another way to level up.

Sometimes you need more information.

Sometimes you need less.

And sometimes you need to shut up long enough to hear what your own body is saying.

Parkour Class: Dialing in the Dive Roll

I learned the front roll, side roll, and back roll a while ago.

But somehow, I never really used the dive roll systematically.

So I understood the idea.

My body apparently had other opinions.

This time, my coach broke it down by comparing a version where the hands make contact with the obstacle and another where they don’t.

Once you add height + speed, rolling is no longer just about rolling.

Your trajectory changes.

Your hands become more than something to support you. They help locate the surface and give your body information about where it’s going.

And when the body gets higher and the trajectory becomes more curved, that contact has to happen at the right moment.

Otherwise—

THUD.

Yep.

That sound is also feedback.

But making contact doesn’t mean staying there.

The movement has to transfer through the shoulder and upper-back line quickly enough to redirect the body away from the obstacle.

That’s where the hands-free version gets interesting.

Your hands may never touch the surface.

But they still have to aim.

They still help the body find the contact point.

Then, at the last moment, they disappear as the body tucks and twists through.

So maybe the question isn’t:

“How do I roll?”

Maybe it’s:

“Where is my body going after I make contact?”

Don’t just roll.

Redirect.

Parkour Class: Let’s Be Quick off the Mark.

Why are we so bad at exploding right out of the gate?

Some say you need to shape your body like a T-800 if you want to win.

But mammals don’t come with titanium armor. More importantly, we don’t process the world like robots do.

We usually blame slow reactions on a vague feeling:
“I just didn’t react fast enough.”

But reaction time isn’t one big blob.

You detect the cue.
You figure out what it means.
You select a response.
Then you actually move.

And these processes don’t simply wait in line like polite gentlemen.

So instead of asking:

“Why am I slow?”

Maybe ask:

“Where did I lose the milliseconds?”

That’s what our Parkour class is testing.

Turn and jump with no warning.
Stand backwards while the obstacles get scrambled.
Turn on a clap.
Use whatever is in front of you without stopping.

The coach isn’t just asking us to react faster.

He’s asking us to find where the delay actually lives.

After all, parkour isn’t about looking cool.

It’s about science.

Parkour Class: Are You Doing the Right Move, or Making the Right Choice?

Coordination is a huge part of parkour.

We practice.
We repeat.
Eventually, the body learns.

And when someone learns faster, we often call it “talent” and move on.

But what if coordination isn’t only about doing the right movement?

What if it’s also about making the right choice at the right moment?

A movement can look correct frame by frame and still fail when momentum changes the timing.

A twist with one foot fixed against a wall can become a balance disaster.

A fully dynamic movement is different. Your body is already moving, and your nervous system has to keep adjusting while the motion is happening.

Same movement.

Different timing.

So maybe the question isn’t only:

“Can you do the move?”

It’s:

“Do you know when to do it?”

Sometimes coordination isn’t about adding more effort.

Sometimes it’s about knowing when to stop interfering.

And yes, the wall still doesn’t come with a pause button.

Parkour Class: Wall Spin Part II — Beyond the Pivot | When Thinking Makes You Worse.

I thought I understood the Wall Spin.

Then I started thinking about it.

In Part I, we talked about the pivot: how the hand creates a point of support against the wall.

But a pivot alone doesn’t explain the rotation.

During my second Wall Spin class, I started paying much more attention to the timing, direction, and mechanism behind the movement.

And something funny happened.

People who could already perform the move suddenly started struggling.

Including the kind of struggling where your brain says, ”Wait... how did I do this before?“

Sometimes learning more doesn‘t immediately make a movement better.

Sometimes it temporarily gets worse.

But that failure can reveal something important:

There is a difference between knowing a movement and knowing when to make the decision that starts it.

This is Part II of my Wall Spin exploration.

No shortcuts. No secret beta.

Just another conversation between the body, the wall, and physics.

Parkour Class | Breaking the Training Wheels

Outdoor classes always feel different.

The floor isn’t flat.

The obstacles aren’t predictable.

And suddenly…

your confidence gets a lot quieter.

Training on rubber playground mounds is fantastic.

Until you start believing you only succeed because the ground forgives you.

Training wheels exist for one reason:

To help you become independent.

Not dependent.

That’s why every soft landing comes with one important question.

Was my roll actually good?

Or did the ground simply hide my mistakes?

The real world never promises soft concrete.

It never promises perfect spacing.

It never promises a second try.

That’s why outdoor training isn’t about harder tricks.

It’s about harder decisions.

Because once your feet leave the ground,

it’s already too late to start thinking.
