As @thepeninsulamanila celebrates its 50th anniversary, the hotel treated the @philippinestarlifestylesection to a culinary journey, starting with appetizers at Spices, followed by the main course at Old Manila, and ending with desserts at the grand lobby.
Along the way, we took a trip down memory lane, sharing our own stories and special moments at the Pen.

THE PHILIPPINE STAR SHINES AT 40

Congratulations to the @philippinestar on its 40th anniversary.

And I'm happy to be part of it, where my column "Write Here, Write Now" is to celebrate an anniversary of its own too. It's almost been a year since it debuted on Aug. 27 last year.

Happy to share the celebratory page with my co-Stars @toda_monique, @lisagnakpil, @rickytchitov, @frannie.jacinto, @missyrabul, and @pajammy. Also in the same anniversary issue is my literary mentor, the late national artist for literature F. Sionil Jose.

The brightest Star of all is our editor @milletmartinezmananquil, lifestyle editor. Thank you so much for giving me this space to keep writing in a national daily. This, in fact, is my second stint in The Philippine Star. I joined it first as a contributor in the late 1990s when I quit the industry thinking it was time to devote my life to doing commercial work, to make the need for money overtake my desire to do something meaningful with my life. My goal then was "to be the king of brochures!"

But then, sometimes you have a calling. I think I did. After four months of writing for the @philippinestarlifestylesection, I was called back to the saddle as lifestyle editor at Manila Standard, prompting me to say goodbye to Millet, the dream boss I only briefly had, as I have always maintained through the decades.

Keep shining, The Philippine Star!

I got to hold Jose Rizal’s personal “kubiyertos” before the items fetched over P2M at the Leon Gallery’s midyear auction last 13 June 2026. Thank you @jaimepdeleon and @lisagnakpil for fueling my fascination for tangible history! #kasaysayan

Rare documents — from Mabini’s True Decalogue to Aguinaldo’s inaugural address, the Malolos Constitution, and the elusive rulebook of the Malolos Congress — had a front-row seat to the birth of Philippine democracy. #kasaysayan
