Today, in honor of the birthday of Bobby McFerrin, I am sharing a portrait I painted in 2019 of this extraordinary artist and the members of his no less legendary vocal improvisation group, Gimme5.
In 2018, I discovered vocal improvisation—a monumental revelation in my journey. An inner calling led me to this practice: the need to free my voice, to confront deeply ingrained insecurities, and to explore the dizzying delights of spontaneous creation. Through vocal improvisation and improvised singing circles, I plunged into a world of pure expression—an art form carried and shared largely thanks to this great vocal adventurer.
But Bobby McFerrin is much more than a virtuoso vocalist and an exceptional improviser—he is a master of play. His legacy goes beyond music. Through the art of the improvised singing circle, he teaches us to listen, to harmonize with others, to support and be supported, to explore the unknown, to dare to leap into the void, to fall and rise again, to surprise ourselves, to discover, to co-create, to play, to express the ineffable, to vibrate with beauty, with the essence of life itself, with the divine.
Bobby McFerrin’s legacy is a gift to humanity—an invitation to peace, connection, healing, the joy of play, the beauty of the moment, spontaneity, and the magic of collective creation.
I had the chance to attend some of his workshops and, eventually, in the summer of 2022, to hand him this painting in person, as a token of gratitude for the profound medicine that is the improvised singing circle.
In those moments when my singing becomes less vocal and more internal, I reflect with gratitude on this defining period of my life. And I hope, I anticipate, I welcome the return of my voice’s extroversion—like a season that inevitably comes back.
Happy birthday, Bobby McFerrin!
