We’re so excited to finally get the word out about what an absolutely beautiful evening we’ve got planned. SOUP NIGHT: There’s No ICE in This Soup December 16, 2025 • Portland, OR Everyone is invited to Soup Night on Tuesday, December 16th, a community gathering centered around soup, bread, fresh-baked cookies, conversation, and care. From 5–8pm at Che (920 NE Glisan), chefs, farmers, makers, and local businesses are joining forces to support immigrant families and community members pushed into poverty or food insecurity, especially as safety-net resources remain uncertain. Soup Night is built on a simple idea: sharing a bowl of soup is an act of solidarity and the belief that everyone deserves to be fed and safe. For $20, guests enjoy a hearty, community-made meal—and that same purchase also provides a meal for someone experiencing food insecurity.  All food and funds from the event will be donated through @growinggardenspdx , who will distribute meals and resources directly to community members in need.  Beer, @landmasswines , and cocktails with support from local producers will be available, with 100%  beverage proceeds also supporting the effort. Special thanks to @laportenapdx @che.pdx @llenapdx @msjamicakes @growinggardenspdx @grandcentralbakery @hungryheartpdx @kitchentablemag @fiddleheadfarmer @vebrewing @gingercultgingerbeer @sillygoosefarmspdx @empowered.flowers @wildrootsfarmers for donating space, time, food, beverage, and so much more. And a special thanks to @elnations @_designkat for this beautiful illustration! We hope to see you all there. Ticket link in profile! (Sorry for the inconvenience. You may only purchase one ticket at a time!)

We know that relationships are the heartbeat of our work. To that end, this year, we launched a mycelium network space for our campus and community partners to engage over shared meals as a catalyst to foster connectivity. On Thursday, we gathered for our last dinner of the academic year and had much to celebrate with the release of our Impact Report designed by @bowpdx, new proposals underway and strong programming teams that have formed to support our regions rising women and gender expansive leaders. Over the last year, we have engaged over 50 partners in co-creating curriculum, facilitating programs and building intentional spaces. This collective is deeply inspired by @adriennemareebrown Emergent Strategy and we are fortunate to be guided by their work. We are grateful to Jessica of @che.pdx, Jami @llenapdx , Remy @remywines and Jax @hungryheartpdx for collaborating with us to provide locally sourced nourishment for these gatherings. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our sponsor @onpointcu for financially supporting us and believing in healthy, relational ecosystems. #Cocreation #Connection #EmergentStrategy #Collective #Mycelium

. VARIETY SHOWCASE SPOTLIGHT Breeder Avram Drucker of Garlicana will join us at the event on Sept 8th. Garlicana is a small farm which lies on a tributary of the South Umpqua River in Tiller, Oregon. While an array of vegetables is grown on the farm, it is primarily focused on garlic for seed bulb production. Avram has been growing garlic for over 25 years but became interested in coaxing true seed out of it after reading the research of Phillip Simon (who will be at the carrot table) and Maria Jenderek in 2004. 🧄Some background🧄 Garlic was domesticated in the Neolithic Era, over ten millennia ago and as humans brought it with them it has gone through mutations that are a result of both human selection for optimal traits as well as climate, latitude, etc. Over time, most garlic genotypes lost fertility, the ability to flower and produce seeds; until relatively recently it was thought garlic was incapable of doing so. Throughout the years, Avram has collected and experimented with a few hundred garlic accessions but after several years of trials, had greatest success from those collected in garlic’s center of origin, Central Asia. In collaboration with Ted Meredith, he has produced thousands of seeds resulting in several lines of new clones over several generations. Each seed can potentially result in a unique cultivar; however, each resultant clone must be grown for several seasons to screen for desirable or deleterious traits. Garlicana offers several True Seed Progeny in an online catalog. These varieties, including any derivatives are pledged to OSSI, the Open Source Seed Initiative, a rejection of patenting. Check out @osseeds for more details and come to the event to talk with them! Come get thoroughly engrossed in garlic with Avram and taste the garlicky creation @msjamicakes of @llenapdx decides to make. Vampires beware. 🧛 Tickets at link in profile. #flavorbeginswithseed Super groovy illustration by @fionabarnacle #varietyshowcase2024

✨ INTRODUCTION TIME ✨ We’re doing a Meet Your Farmer series to introduce this year’s crew to you all, and first up is…. Jami (she/her) Jami made her way to Wild Roots after 15 years of professional cooking. She started off as a volunteer and eventually got hired on as a crew member. Since discovering Wild Roots years ago, Jami has worked on farms in Australia and around Portland until making her way back to us! She is with us one day a week on the farm and will be helping Bailey out with farmers markets starting in July. Jami’s go to farm snack/lunch: “When I’m unprepared, hummus and the “ugly” farmer veg. Prepared is prob a big salad with all the goodies. Favorite farm snack….watermelon!! When it’s time..” If you could have any vegetable as hair what would it be? “Between a garlic scape messy bun, or a flowering zucchini high pony. Depends on the occasion.” When Jami’s not farming you can find her hanging with her dogs. Traveling anywhere warm in winter. In her own garden. At a water source with her partner. Doing endless kitchen projects. Or cooking at her pop up @llenapdx which y’all should keep an eye out for!! 🍅🧡🌞
