You've heard about the "attention economy" and what it's doing to reading – to our ability to approach a text with patience and an eye towards depth of understanding. Join us on Tuesday (12:00 - 1:30pm in the Marymount Center) as we resist this trend and instead engage in a collective public reading of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The Public Scholar."

On August 31, 1837, Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered a speech to the Phi Beta Kappa society of Harvard College called “The American Scholar.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., called it a second declaration of independence, a call to throw off the shackles not of political oppression, but rather of intellectual and cultural subservience. Emerson’s exhortation shaped social, philosophical, and artistic projects that expressed the spirit of a young nation.

This will be a participatory event. Volunteers will take turns, paragraph by paragraph, reading aloud from Emerson’s essay. The full reading should last about 45 minutes, after which there will be Q&A and discussion. Copies of the text will be provided. Traditional university goals are being undercut by a decline in reading, increasing reliance on AI to summarize difficult texts and draft written work, the intrusion of the “attention economy” on almost every aspect of life, and a general passivity with respect to intellectual and cultural life. Resisting that trend, this will be a participatory event. Volunteers will take turns, paragraph by paragraph, reading aloud from Emerson’s essay. Thank you to Dr. Christopher Kaczor, ND Class of 1994 and 1996 and parent of a current ND student, for his lecture on Alasdair MacIntyre, one of the most important philosophers of thr 20th century who lived a life of constant growth and conversions, wrote such seminal works, inspired and intimidated students with his brilliance and dry wit🤔, and even led to the breakup of The Beatles! We greatly appreciate all the club members, the LMU students and professors who took time out of their busy schedules to attend a philosophy lecture! We hope that you check out “After Virtue” from the library ☺️ and we hope that we made our brilliant professor proud with our tribute! 📚 @ndphilosophy @lmuphilosophy
