Seven months ago, 17-year-old Jennifer Rivas arrived in the United States from Ecuador not speaking a word of English. Today, after participating in an immersive English program at the PNW BOCES Career and Technical Education Center, the Mahopac student is working on her GED.

Mateo Jimenez, also from Ecuador, is in the same program in the English as a New Learner (ENL) Career Academy. He arrived a year ago to join his aunt in Cortlandt Manor. At 18, he said he spoke “a little English” when he arrived, but he is much more comfortable speaking it now.

As participants in the ENL Career Academy, students may take classes in one of a variety of trades. Mateo is taking Architecture and Engineering and plans to pursue that as a career. Jennifer is also enrolled in the architecture class but plans to switch to nursing next year. “I’ve learned that I want to get into the health field,” she said.

The ENL Immersion program is designed for students just like Mateo and Jenny. Youngsters who have recently arrived from a non-English-speaking country with a variety of cultural and academic experiences. Some students arrive with limited schooling, and this may be their first formal education experience, in which case the goal of the program is to improve their literacy. More advanced students, like Mateo and Jenny, are prepared for the high school equivalency, GED.

🎉PROMOTED!🎉 Introducing Bedford's newest addition, Assistant Store Manager Ardian Gecaj. He is so excited to meet all of our customers at our Grand Opening on Friday, March 25th. Learn more about his journey with DeCicco & Sons below.

Ardian Gecaj’s started as a part-time cashier in 2016. When he graduated high school, he found an opening in the Grocery department and eventually the Dairy department. Ardian saw the opportunity to reset the department and instill a level of organization that would benefit not only DeCicco & Sons but also the customers, so he went for it. After resetting the entire department, he wanted more.

For an entire year, he started a mentorship program with the store manager, where he slowly began taking on more responsibility. From following and creating new processes to closing on his own, Ardian continued to grow and learn. “I am sad to leave my colleagues and so many of our customers that I have gotten to know behind, but I am excited for this new opportunity that awaits me.”

Good luck finding a more Midwestern mug around here than Will Browne’s, the Euchre instructor for Friday’s Game Night Benefit for Ukraine. Raised in Minnesota, Will grew up playing (and loving) the card game Euchre. When he moved to NY, he was surprised to learn that not many people had heard of Euchre, and those who did were either fellow Midwestern transplants or learned it from one.

Euchre (yew-ker) is a fun and easy-to-learn 4-person partner card game that originated in Germany and is extremely popular in my beloved Midwest. It’s less cut-throat than poker, more straightforward than bridge, and doesn’t require constant attention (so getting up to grab corn nuts won’t hurt your play).

As @deependbook put it in his excellent article The People’s Card Game, “Euchre passes idle time with real people in real life, a kind of loafing that feels as endangered as any card game.”

People love it because it fosters human connection (much like, oh, say @into.leaf). In fact, just this weekend a friend who hails from Indiana teared up thinking about all the late nights in college he spent playing Euchre, “the poor man’s bridge.” OK, he had had some drinks, but still, this stuff runs deep!

Lucky for us, Will is bringing Euchre to the Rivertowns on 3/25 from 7-9:30p @hvwriterscenter. BYOB because we’ll be serving hotdish (a casserole made of condensed, creamed, cheesy things, usually beefy but I’m going with @impossible_foods). And if THAT weren’t enough, all of the profits are going to the emergency fund at @razom.for.ukraine. Because good God, these people need help.

Instruction starts at 7 and open (supervised) play begins at 7:45. Not into Euchre but still want to join in? We’ll have a table waiting for you. And if you just want to donate, there’s a link for that too (thank you in advance!). Register in the bio or at intoleaf.co/workshops/p/euchre ♠️🇺🇦🌱

Upper Nyack’s School Street has enough history to supply a syllabus. The row houses that line the block were built to accommodate the families of 19th century boat yard workers when Nyack was a regional center for ship building. If the corner store where the street meets North Broadway is strangely familiar, it’s because the address was immortalized by Edward Hopper. The school house that gave the street its name is gone, but the sound of the bell that rang from its tower to summon students to class still lingers in memory. — by wrbatson @billbatsonny https://nyacknewsandviews.com/2022/03/nyack-sketch-log-school-street-syllabus/
