Our second walking tour on Saturday hosted by Isobel Durrant @londonbyguide had us walking through the social and horticultural history of Camberwell.

We were taught so much about the evolution of the area, from where we began in Burgess Park which was once home to market gardens and a windmill for producing the grain grown in the area to the renovated and preserved green space it is today. We visited Sceaux Gardens where we became aware of how the site formerly belonged to Camberwell House, a home for those considered mentally unwell in the 1800s. The House formerly stretched 20 acres, home to flower beds, fruit and vegetable patches which were tended to by the patients.

Along the walk we stopped off at

🌞Caspian Street Allotment
🍃Elmington Community Gardens
🌞Benhill Road Nature Garden
🍃The Secret Garden (on the D’eynsford Estate)
🌞Brunswick Park
🍃Sceaux Gardens
🌞Lucas Gardens

Finishing up our walk being greeted by the growers of the Ruskin Park community garden to coffee, tea and cake in the sunshine.

These walks always leave us with a new perspective on the streets we walk down, as we become aware of how we are a part of the changes in the history of our local areas.

Big thanks to
@gardenruskin
@elmingtoncommunitygardens
@friendsoflucasgardens
for warmly welcoming us all

A throwback to our previous history walk with @londonbyguide back in October of last year. We covered the heritage of Walworth - a area well known for being the home to nurseries, food growing and costermongers (fruit sellers.)
•
Isobel discussed with us the history of many notable individuals who contributed to the horticultural history of the area from James Maddock, a fruit tree grower who began the first florists directory. To William Curtis, a respected botanist who formed the oldest society of natural history and started the Kew Magazine, as well as later becoming a designer of Victoria Park. The area has supported the growth of many individuals and attracted philanthropists who were set on helping the deprived residents of the workhouses that populated the area through the 1880s. Many of the street names and subtle details of urban planning were uncovered for us through Isobel’s thorough research.
•
We ended our walk at one of our member gardens #lamlashgardens snuggled behind Elephant and Castle, home to a Elizabethan inspired herbal garden, community allotments and a pedestrianised walkway/food forest occupies the rest of the street. Well worth a visit!
•
Come and join us this Saturday in Camberwell to learn more #hiddenhistory
