Went to the Barbican last night to see the premier of Savage House starring Richard E Grant, Claire Foy and Jack Farthing. Hugely enjoyable, wonderful acting, beautifully shot, funny and pointed. It reminded me of The Draughtman's Contract which i now want to see again. Don't miss it. We had a great evening. #cinema #SavageHouse #SXSW #Barbican by @londonbyguide

I met my sculptor cousin Russell this morning to visit the This, That and the Other exhibition at the Handbag Factory in Kennington. More pictures tomorrow i think. Walking the streets of Kennington and Vauxhall, dodging the showers, i really enjoyed showing him some of the places i include in guided walks of those neighbourhoods. I realise i haven't offered them for a while. Maybe it's time to do a Local London series once more. We went into the Vauxhall Teahouse Theatre. Russell loved it. Both cats appeared, and Maggie who has attitude came to check us out. Later we saw her helping herself to a fellow customer's milk. Cheeky girl! #Kennington #vauxhall #HandbagGallery #BlueBadgeTouristGuide by @londonbyguide

So yesterday I posted pictures of these two building sand asked who or what connects them. I'm posting them again now plus two more which give the answer. It's John Donne. Best known as a metaphysical poet, he was also Dean of St Paul's cathedral. In his youth he ran away with Ann More of Loseley and they married. her family was not pleased.Loseley House and gardens have just opened for the summer season, and is well worth a visit. As well as enjoying the ice cream made there, fans of Bridgerton may recognise Benedict's cottage. #loseleyhouse #icecream #bluebadgetouristguide #Bridgerton by @londonbyguide

I was so excited when I saw this flyer. The chance to watch and maybe even play with the police dogs. Wow! Then i read the bottom of the flyer and realised i might be the oldest 'child' there. #policedogs #cityoflondonpolice #shoelanelbrary #workingdogs by @londonbyguide

Continuing with the family history theme: Three Sisters. My paternal grandmother, Dolly, her next sister, Madge and her youngest sister, Queenie. I don't have a picture of the fourth sister as a girl or young woman. Dolly's real name was Amy, but she was very small, hence Dolly. Madge was Wilhelmina Madeleine, and Queenie was Evelyn May. The missing sister, Margaret Beatrice Etheldreda was known as Tup as my great grandfather called her his Tuppenny bit.I have no idea why. They were all Camberwell girls. My grandmother looks like a young woman in her early twenties to me, very calm. Madge trained to be a teacher at St Gabriel's College in Myatts Fields SE5. I always imagine this photo dates from that time. I love the boater. Queenie is wearing the uniform of Mary Datchelor School. All four sisters attended this school. Their brothers went to Wilson's Grammar School. #familyhistory #socialhistory #maydatchelorschool #wilsonsgrammarschool #sisters #stgabrielscollege by @londonbyguide

I was at the Barbican today, and walked a bit in the surrounding streets, walked in the footsteps of ancestors. Years ago, one of my aunts wanted to research part of our family tree. I was in London, so got the gig. It's one of the main reasons I got into guiding. I found ancestors who were coppersmiths where the Barbican is now. At the time, i reckoned their business was where Chimes music shop now stands, though i don't remember how i narrowed it down to that spot. They would have known the brewery buildings which now remain. Bunhill Row leads to the non-conformist burial ground where at least three of them (and William Blake) are interred. Meanwhile, in the Barbican shop i found my friend Michèle's two cookery books for sale. Buy now while stocks last! #familyfootsteps #becauseimalondoner #barbican #bluebadgetouristguide #walklondon by @londonbyguide

Spent most of today at The Postal Museum which seemed a pretty food way to start the New Year. As well as a history if the postal service and a ride on the mail rail, there was an exhibition about how enslaved people were made to load coal onto packet ships even after slavery was abolished in the British Empire. The authorities got round it by stopping at ports where Denmark, which had not abolished slavery, was in control until 1848. It's good to see our past being faced and acknowledged with honesty. The museum, on the site of the former sorting office is great. There are new flats opposite where someone has used their imagination to install airvents shaped like pillar boxes #becaseimalondoner #bluebadgetouristguide #visitlondon #postalmuseum by @londonbyguide

It's panto season again! The Union Theatre's adult panto opened last week. Very loosely based on the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, it has a tiny cast who play multiple parts and work their socks off. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves enormously when we went last night. It needs a bit of tightening up on the first half and i'm guessing some of the slower scenes will be ditched during the run, but we really enjoyed ourselves at this great venue near Southwark tube station. Arselan's wig nearly stole the show for me, and Joe Pieri's Mr Topless was great. Silly, funny, irreverent, a goodnight out. Also have to give a shout out for @bala_baya almost next door and our lovely waitress Adi for a great pre theatre meal. #christmas #pantomime @theuniontheatre #southwark #bluebadgetouristguide #becauseimalondoner #restaurant#goodfood by @londonbyguide

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I took this picture two days ago. Each year a tree is 'built' across from the south transept. Inside the cathedral there were two trees from the Windsor Great Park. I expect the one on the west front will be in place soon. There are carol services all over London this weekend. Join in and enjoy! #stpaulscathedral #christmas #christmastree #bluebadgetouristguide #bespoketours #becauseimalondoner by @londonbyguide

The Vineyard off licence on the evervibrant Ormeau Road, BT7, has to be one of the best stocked and friendliest anywhere. I visited with NI BBG Petra, pleased to be able to show her something she didn't know. We discussed gin, whiskey, and cats with the assistant. #offlicence #friendly @the_vineyard_belfast #ormeauroad #visitbelfast #thisisbelfast #bluebadgetouristguide #lovebelfast by @londonbyguide
