A running store can be a place that sells shoes. Or it can be the thing that holds a running community together.

@sfrunco is now a @longrunlabs partner, and the part I care about has almost nothing to do with the podcast.

My good friend @vivekgowri took over the shop and has been building it around the runners who make the Bay Area run scene special: the community, events, and advice from people who are doing the damn thing too.

Took a train up through the English countryside to go visit @scienceinsport and @hytro_ for a tour and @longrunlabs episode with @dan_lampard, and a great first time meeting @warren_hytro and talking shop about the progress of the company that’s bringing blood flow restriction to athletes worldwide.

I’m reminded yet again that the best conversations happen in person and that it’s often worth the effort to jump on the flight or take the trip. Today required over five hours of train time plus a few hours in the car, and I’m so glad I did it.

I used to think the interview was where you won the job.

Then @jwlevitt said something I haven’t been able to shake: “Opportunity moves through trust.”

We obsess over perfect résumés, cover letters, and portfolios, convinced the interview is where we’ll close the deal. Then we wonder why the phone isn’t ringing and the inbox sits empty.

It’s not that applications don’t matter. We’re just over-resourcing them at the expense of the things that really move the needle.

Jon again: “You’re not being evaluated on your pitch. You’re being evaluated on what someone said about you last week. Your reputation arrives ahead of you.”

So, what’s the move?

Less applying, more world-building. “It’s better to be known by a handful of people who can describe exactly what you’re great at than by thousands who can’t describe you at all. You want to become the answer to a specific question,” Levitt says.

Today is episode 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣‼️ gimme that mic indeed!!

@forthelrpod launched in January of 2019, and I’ve put out 439 episodes since then. For The Long Run is all about exploring the why and sustainable excellence. I’ve interviewed some of the best athletes in the world, experts in nutrition and performance, and runners from the front/middle/back of the pack with amazing stories to tell on how and why they do the thing.

@longrunlabs came along last June and today marks episode 61. Long Run Labs is all about those building the outdoor industry; the innovators and founders, marketers, investors, media personalities, and the athletes doing more than just athletics. It has been a fun place to learn more about the business side of the sport.

While I’d still have these conversations even if nobody were listening, you’ve all made it possible to do so much more than I ever could’ve imagined, and this platform has opened more doors than I ever expected.

My tip: if you want to build something, just start. Follow your curiosity. This has never been about making money, even though now it’s part of how I pay my bills. It’s always been about the conversations and the connections.

Most runners know they should be fueling better. Almost none of them have an actual plan for it. Andy Blow has spent fifteen years watching athletes of every level make the same mistake — showing up to long runs and races with a vague idea of what they’ll eat and drink and figuring it out as they go. No numbers. No tracking. No benchmark to build from. This week on For The Long Run, Andy talks about what the data from elite athletes like Rachel Entrekin and Caleb Olson actually shows, why Precision Fuel and Hydration separates fuel from hydration, and what most amateur runners can do right now to change how they perform on race day. One year of betting on myself. ✅

A year of growth, real risk, and a whole lot of running. The best part wasn’t any number. It was finally getting to show up in person, for the conversations and the people that started this whole thing. And having so many of y’all along for the ride.

That little chip on the bib is a @laurelinnovations timing device. It knows where I am on a race course, if I’ve slowed down or stopped moving. That technology is powered by AI.

I see a lot of fear about AI in this community, and most of it is fair. Most of what gets sold as AI is slop nobody asked for.

A runner died on the Cocodona course this year.

Trail and ultra running has a safety problem that has nothing to do with slop. Runners go off-route, off-pace, or into trouble in places nobody can see them. The technology that tells you where every runner actually is, in real time, is AI.

That’s not tech producing content; it’s the difference between someone being found and someone not being found.

You can be against AI replacing the human craft of this sport. I am too. It’s a lot harder to be against the thing that could save a life on course or make the broadcast more interesting.

Last week on @longrunlabs, @randizuckerberg and I discussed this use case for AI; how technology can power a safer experience, and ultimately a better fan experience too. I had more thoughts, especially after running my first race timed by Laurel (@baytobreakers with over 30k runners!), so I wrote them up in an article. I shared what I noticed, and also what I didn’t see on course (tons of beeping timing mats) in the article.

Full disclosure: I’m an investor and advisor in the company building this, and I introduced Randi and many others to them. So this isn’t meant to be objective. It’s a point of view I hold with conviction.

Gonna toot my horn here for a sec because I’m proud.

I’m really good at what I do.
And I’m finally starting to believe it.

Led a powerful panel with two Olympians + two Kona champs on Thursday about women in sport and the progress made/still needed, and then another tactical and useful conversation for @probionutrition last night all about fueling and nutrition.

Felt like I belonged at the table.

Do something you love enough, and you’ll start to figure it out. Grateful to help steer such an important conversation for @chelseasodaro and @forallmothersorg, and somehow felt like I belonged at the table 🙏

I got one of the best compliments possible following that discussion: your questions and curiosity let the story breathe. The athletes all have made significant contributions off the competitive field and your understanding of their sport and branding helped us all understand the value of marketing the entire story. Well done. (thanks @peterreilly2004).

I’ve had the privilege of getting to know athletes like @chelseasodaro @karagoucher @alysiamontano @mirindacarfrae over the years and really enjoy sharing their stories with all of you. Thanks for trusting me with this conversation.
