Today is episode 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣‼️ gimme that mic indeed!!

@forthelrpod launched in January of 2019, and I’ve put out 439 episodes since then. For The Long Run is all about exploring the why and sustainable excellence. I’ve interviewed some of the best athletes in the world, experts in nutrition and performance, and runners from the front/middle/back of the pack with amazing stories to tell on how and why they do the thing.

@longrunlabs came along last June and today marks episode 61. Long Run Labs is all about those building the outdoor industry; the innovators and founders, marketers, investors, media personalities, and the athletes doing more than just athletics. It has been a fun place to learn more about the business side of the sport.

While I’d still have these conversations even if nobody were listening, you’ve all made it possible to do so much more than I ever could’ve imagined, and this platform has opened more doors than I ever expected.

My tip: if you want to build something, just start. Follow your curiosity. This has never been about making money, even though now it’s part of how I pay my bills. It’s always been about the conversations and the connections.

Thanks for being here. We’re just getting started 🚀🚀

What makes a brand matter beyond the products it puts on shelves?

Erin Cooper, Director of Marketing for Performance and Sportstyle at Salomon North America, joins Long Run Labs to talk about the people, athletes and communities behind the brand, and where Salomon is headed next.

They get into Salomon’s new five-year partnership with IRONMAN, the rise of the multidimensional athlete, why gravel is becoming an increasingly important part of the running landscape, the brand’s continued investment in trail, and the role run specialty plays in connecting it all.

Plus, Erin shares how Salomon thinks about showing up authentically in new spaces without losing what has made the brand what it is today.

A running store can be a place that sells shoes. Or it can be the thing that holds a running community together.

@sfrunco is now a @longrunlabs partner, and the part I care about has almost nothing to do with the podcast.

My good friend @vivekgowri took over the shop and has been building it around the runners who make the Bay Area run scene special: the community, events, and advice from people who are doing the damn thing too.

Look at how they’re doing events 👇

💰 A women’s prize purse worth racing for
👶 Childcare grants so parents can get to the start line
🤝 Deferrals that treat runners like people when life happens
🏕️ Showing up for the community before, during, and after race day, not just for 3 hours on a Saturday
🏃‍♀️ A focus on representation and helping *everyone* feel comfortable getting out there and seeing themselves on the starting line

That’s what a store can be when someone actually cares how it feels to run in this sport.

Next one up: the Women’s Trail Half Marathon in the Marin Headlands on October 24.

And if you’re on the industry side: brands with something unique that isn’t in big box retail should talk to SFRC about wholesale, West Coast event partners should look at their calendar, and podcasters should get Vivek on the mic. He’ll tell you exactly why he’s building it this way.

In the meantime, you’ll be hearing more from him on @longrunlabs soon! He’s become a regular on that + @forthelrpod and will continue to be.

SFRun.co also has an online shopping experience that we’ll be working on improving too. Check it out!

TLDR: I wanna do cool shit with my friends. Stoked on this. Grateful people like Vivek exist. The running community is and will continue to be better because of people like him.

Dan Lampard is Chief Commercial and Operating Officer at Science in Sport (SiS), where his background in finance meets a lifelong interest in sport and performance.

Recorded at SiS headquarters in Blackburn, England, Dan shares how he thinks about building a sports nutrition brand in a rapidly growing endurance market.

They dig into why SiS wants to be just as good at telling athletes when they don’t need a gel as when they do, why education and trust matter more than simply chasing conversions, and how the company decides which athletes, experts, retailers, and markets are actually worth investing in.

Dan also talks about the rise of the multi-sport athlete, what brands can learn from training and high-performance sport, balancing financial realities with long-term brand building, expanding in the U.S. and Japan, and why a growing market doesn’t have to mean treating every other brand as the enemy.

They finish with AI, the future of personalized sports nutrition, and why technology may make human connection and real-world communities even more valuable.

Sito Luis spent more than two decades at Camper before an idea born during the pandemic eventually brought him together with @kilianjornet to launch @nnormal_official. Now, as CEO, he’s helping build a trail running brand around authenticity, durability, and a genuine connection to the sport.

Sito joins the show to talk about how NNormal came to be, why Kilian’s role as a co-founder goes far beyond having a famous athlete attached to the brand, and what he’s learned about building a company from the ground up. He explains why NNormal hires people who actually run trails, how the brand approaches growth without chasing demand too quickly, and why run specialty stores have played such an important role in its expansion.

They also get into the growing crossover between technical outdoor products and fashion, the differences between trail running consumers in the U.S. and Europe, using AI for demand forecasting, and NNormal’s decision to prioritize shoes that last longer rather than simply using materials that sound more sustainable.

Sito also shares his thoughts on the rapid growth of trail running, why brands can’t fake belonging to the community, and how the sport can welcome more people without losing what makes it special.

What makes someone choose one brand over another when the products themselves aren’t all that different?

Brian Button joins Jon to talk about brand strategy, authenticity, and what companies can learn from his time helping build brands like Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart. Brian shares how Lyft differentiated itself from Uber despite offering essentially the same product, why founder-led brands should pull back the curtain, and why authenticity is something brands have to earn, not simply claim.

They also dig into the return of long-form content and in-person experiences, why the best brand activations feel true to who a company already is, and how a clear brand strategy can give teams permission to experiment without chasing every new idea.

Plus, Jon and Brian talk about using AI as a thought partner rather than a replacement for human intuition, creating cultures where people are allowed to be wrong, and why so many companies suffer from the same problem: urgency without clarity.

This is a conversation about building brands people actually care about and creating enough clarity that everyone knows which direction to row. Listen wherever you get your podcasts - Long Run Labs Podcast.
