It’s hard to photograph a quilt this big, but I think we managed it. We also had some fun playing around behind-the-scenes. (I’ve included two of my favorite BTS photos.)
.
I started this quilt in 2022, so it’s been a long time in the making. I really love the fabrics. It’s almost a shame that it’s done because it was a a nice one to keep coming back to. But, I am glad it’s done and out of my itty-bitty apartment!

Photo 3: the whole quilt again. Photo 4: Laurie, a white woman with short grey hair, is standing on a stepladder. She’s wearing a crisp white blouse, jeans, and large round glasses. She’s holding the quilt, and it’s draped in front of her. Photo 5: Mercedes, a white woman with curly red hair, is trying to hold the quilt and spread it out at the same time. She’s looking at the quilt somewhat pensively—because it’s large and bulky and she’s not sure how best to display it.

My first time using a sewing machine was in a Mother’s Day how to sew class. My mom and I both made half aprons. I got really into sewing, but never made another garment (unless you count masks).
.
About 10 years, 2 sets of tea cozies and matching coasters, 12 or so pillow cases, and maybe 25 quilts later, I decided it was time to try sewing some thing that isn’t a home furnishing. I figured another half apron was a good place to start.
.
I did try a slightly more complex pattern, figuring my skills have advanced since the time I didn’t know how to thread sewing machine. it took me the better part of a day, but I have a really good apron.
.
I still have that first one. And you can see by comparison the skill level improvements.
.
Quilting is definitely my primary sewing activity, but there will be more garments soon. This is fun and much quicker than making a whole quilt (at least with the simple sewing patterns I plan to use).
.
Now I just need to get better at taking pictures of myself.
.
ID: image 1: Mercedes standing in a small and somewhat cluttered kitchen. Her red hair is short and held back in a colorful purple, pink, and yellow headband; she is wearing grey glasses, a dark red-purple turtleneck and a black half apron. The apron is mostly black with grey and white dots, but it has contrasting pale grey pockets with black rick rack trim. The apron is tied at the waist with a big bow at the front. Mercedes is looking down and smiling (and trying not to laugh).
.
Image 2: Mercedes in the same location and outfit. This time her back is turned so we can see the side of the apron and her black skirt in the back.
.
Image 3: Mercedes and her mother are standing, smiling broadly. They’re wearing matching half aprons that are turquoise with a yellow and green pattern and coordinating yellow pockets and waist bands.
.
Image 4: both aprons are laid side by side so you can see the hems (and how much better the hems and pocket on the new, black one look).

Glorious evening on the sun porch. 5 yrs in and we finally pulled all the vinyl off the porch interior. We found that the lower walls are all original bead-board . Every accessory and soft furnishing was made by us here at The Farm. My daughter made the wreath on the door. I made the grapevine wreaths on the windows. My daughter and I made the curtains. The Brit made the barn wood rack hanging next to the door. When we sand and poly the LR floor we will do the same to the sunroom floor. Under layers of flooring we are so lucky to have once again uncovered original wood flooring. This addition was done at a time when sympathetic restoration was not a thing. Someday we will replace the very out of place windows. Until then we are so grateful to have another lovely space to relax and enjoy the view of our land. My health issues have been working hard to beat me. I am working hard to fight back. Sometimes working hard means means a cup of tea and a rest on the porch with the cat and dogs. that’s ok too. I like life, even when it does not like me! Love and good health to all. ❤️☮️🏡 #sunporch #homemade #restoration #preserve #renovate #oldhouses #countryhome #threeseasonporch @nathanwenzelrealestate #farmhousedecor #farmhouse #farmhousesunroom #myrenostory #buildingahome #myoldhome

I brought in the last of the lilacs. Stella and Jesse love the smell. A storm is passing around is. The sky darkened and the wind whipped up. Still hot and humid however this will break this evening. I love this room. It was one of the most neglected rooms when I purchased my home. As a result it has perhaps been one of the bigger challenges this house has presented. This room has a past. I feel it. I imagine it. Since 1820 this has been a place of celebration and remembrance. I am honored to give it a future. So many memories yet to be made. #diningroom #farmhousediningroom #countryhome #farmtable #windsorchairs #books #blackandwhite #lilacs #yorkiesofinstagram #yorkie #borderjack

My mom’s birthday dinner: @shakeshack shackburgers at home (@goldbelly is a pretty darn amazing service!), with tater tots (I couldn’t find crinkle fries) smothered in cheese sauce thanks to Shake Shack’s at home recipe videos. And chocolate cake covered in coconut buttercream and filled with chocolate pudding!

New additions. The Crew Rug from Magnolia, x2. Very happy with them. They subtly tie the two rooms together They work beautifully with the LR sofa and the Library wallpaper. The coffee table was made here at The Farm by the Brit. He used wood from the original barn. I will make some throw pillows and tweak at some point. The wheat back arm chair was upholstered and the seat made here at The Farm. I salvaged the round white table. The fabric cabinet was a curb find. The afghan and pillow were made by my daughter. I have always decorated at my own pace and on a tight budget. I actually feel like the budget has made me more creative and true to what I actually love. The budget also challenged me to upholster, restore, stain, paint, and create. These rooms spoke to me when they were empty. I feel the many happy memories made here in the last 225 yrs. Now we are the caretakers and making our own memories. Sorry for the ramble. As a restful Shabbat comes to an end I am feeling energized. Every weekend I plan our meals for the coming week. Once a month I restock the pantry and freezer. This month each shopping will be a bit larger as I stock for a winter of largely vegetarian meals. Some pescatarian. If you have not discovered Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi, you should. Their cookbooks are gorgeous. Filled with more than great recipes. The pictures are beautiful and the stories are riveting. With all the challenges I really am managing to have a lovely life. A lovely country life. Tea, cookies, and coaster, courtesy of The Brit. The furniture was all sourced by me from curbs to warehouse sales. All pieces rehabbed by me from paint to upholstery. Stella and Chloe send their love. #library #entrywaytable #family #healthychoices #healthylifestyle #happyhome #antiques #cookbooks #mealplanning #vegetarianrecipes #lifeaftersixty #ottolenghi #mycountryhome #countrylife #countryliving #farmhouse #farmhouselife #yorkie #calicocat #rescues #adoptdontshop

Meet my fabulous wonderful makes me so happy new old door. We spent the morning in door heaven. It is a salvage place that I try not to go to because I always spend more than I should. Today we were on a mission. The door from the sun porch to the kitchen is the door we use every day. It has always been flimsy and badly installed. Very old but not original and not pretty. We went antique all the way, door, lock set, door knob, face plates, etc. Lots to do but totally worth it. Will post progress. Nearly 3 yrs and soon the door will be complete and off the list. Can’t wait to start. Well actually to watch the Brit start. 😊💕🏡💕 #antiques #antiquedoor #antiquedoorknob #farmhouse #countryhome #countryliving #countrylife #farmhouserenovation #farmhouserestoration #salvageyard #antiquestore #antique #reuse #repurpose #doors

Balance is important in all stages of life. Finding balance is tricky. Maintaining balance is trickier. Yesterday I had to manage on my own. My daughter had shopped and left me with easy healthy no cook choices. The Brit ensured the barn etc was clean and I had easy access to all. As a result I had a wonderful independent day. Important for my mental health as well as my physical being. Today I am lazing in the master with a healthy breakfast and a birthday gift from my girl. In my fantasy Nigella and I hang out at her home and cook together. She is just the right mix of amazing and flawed, kind and snarky, to be someone I find interesting. For now I settle for her cookbooks. I just ignore recipes with the words lamb, veal, or blood in them. 😂💕 #healthyfood #healthyliving #breakfast #starbuckscoffee #blueberries #masterbedroom #farmhouse #farmhouseliving #farmhousemasterbedroom #healthychoices #healthyfoodchoices #countryliving #autoimmunedisease #lorelaimade
