They call them “bad habits”. I call it instincs.

When I became a mama, I realized instantly that Bowie was never overwhelming. But the noise and opinions of others were.

Here are five “bad habits” we never feel guilty about 👇

1️⃣ We co sleep
She still sleeps in our room, in our bed even, because in this season of her development, it's what is best for us and for her. It will not be forever, but it feels right for now.

📚 Room/bedsharing supports longer breastfeeding and more stable sleep patterns.

2️⃣ Feeding through the night
“She's not hungry anymore.” Maybe. But breastfeeding is not just about hunger. It is comfort, regulation, and connection. All of which are vital for baby development.

📚 Night feeds maintain milk supply regulate cortisol and support healthy weight and circadian rhythm.

3️⃣ Contact naps (not always but when it makes sense)
They release oxytocin, which teaches her body what safety feels like. They help me regulate too. They allow us to rest together.

📚 Oxytocin promotes bonding, reduces stress, and supports better baby sleep.

4️⃣ Nursing to sleep
The world calls it a “negative sleep association.” But nature gave me this gift of melatonin in my milk to help her fall asleep, and I refuse to see that as negative, it's biology.

📚 Breastmilk contains tryptophan, a sleep promoting amino acid that supports melatonin production and emotional development.

5️⃣ Supporting her to sleep
There is no self soothing before toddlerhood. It is a complex skill linked to brain development. (My child psychologist friend tells me). Crying it out at 4 months or even 12 months, not for us. It is okay to rock, nurse, or hold your baby.
Crying is communication, and night wakings are normal.

She goes to bed around 930 pm. because that is when her sleep pressure is best, and we wake up together around 730 am. That rhythm works beautifully for us right now.

None of these are “bad habits.” They are human needs. Meeting them builds trust, resilience, and long-term emotional health. 💛

Save this for those nights you need a reminder that you’re doing everything right.

There are days I look in the mirror and see a stranger.

Motherhood.
Growth.
Healing.
It changes everything.

But the truth is... she never left.

She’s just becoming someone new, and I LOVE who she is becoming.
