It’s been a stressful time of late, suddenly having no job and no income has a way of distracting a person, and when that person is already so easily distracted and knocked off kilter, it’s amazing I’ve done *anything* right since early August. This is the song I meant to share. It’s a more recent cover of Iggy Pop’s Passenger and everything I said about Tom @losersuk and @paulmullen still apply to this. Hope you enjoy the bonus and honest f*ck up. #cover #songcover #iggy #coversong #electronicmusic

This week I’d like to highlight three works that are relatively new, I appreciate our focus together has been in the warm glow of nostalgia and I feel like these three recommendations all have a reassuring tinge of the past about them, especially this, as it’s a cover of one of my favourite bands of all time, @tearsforfearsmusic whom I’ve been lucky enough to interview twice. @losersuk started off as my production moniker but when I started working with the incandescently brilliant Tom Bellamy, @thecoopertempleclause multi instrumentalist - it was his virtuoso musicianship and love of live performance which gave us the impetus to evolve into a live band. Tom brought another incredibly talented musician, singer, guitar player @paulmullen from @yourcodenameismilo and The Automatic and gave me the chance to work with two of the best musicians I’ve ever interacted with. I have to pinch myself with how lucky I was to have made four albums with these guys. Hope you like our cover. I only ever have two aims with covers. 1. Keep the song’s integrity and 2. Give it new context. Job done here, I feel and hope you do too. Happy Monday! #tearsforfears #cover #musiccover #electronicmusic #shout

First written in our Kingston student flat sometime in 2005, The Sound of Music arrived quite naturally. There’s a young couple connected by a shared love of music, despite the strains put on them by that very thing. On a coffee table, the usual signs of excess and dwindling print media. A backdrop of a post-Iraq war election.

After 12 years of songwriting, this was the first time I felt I’d captured something of its moment - not just confessional, but something slightly broader, using a balance of observation and playfulness that I was starting to enjoy.

Musically it was more straight-ahead rock and roll than anything we’d done previously or since, with surf and glam influences. And Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps was on repeat at that time. After Dylan, Saul, and Sam added their own elevating guitar, bass, and drum parts, it became a live staple for a few years. Duncan Mills put a lot of love into the production, somehow using a traditionally benign Omnichord to create an arresting, psychedelic intro.

It was finally released in 2010, remixed for My Luminaries' self-produced debut album, and placed towards the back end - by then it no longer felt like the statement of intention it still deserved to be.

After years of ambivalence I can finally appreciate this record for what it is. It fucking rocks. And it captures a special something created by four idealistic young men putting their shared musical ambitions before everything else.

Only seventeen years overdue, The Sound of Music is now up on the streaming platforms as a 3 track single, alongside an alternative mix (used on Disney's PURE quad bike video game and the closest thing to a My Luminaries bootleg) and a Losers UK remix made at the time, which I love. My very talented friend Tom Fearn adds another piece of beautiful artwork to the collection.
