saturday september 12 / studio thoughts

a quiet morning spent in the studio connected a few thoughts that have been rattling around my brain for the last few weeks.

i’ve had some really big life shifts recently and a different schedule has made studio time a littler harder to access, so i wanted to take a moment to understand a few layers deeper and acknowledge what additional friction i may be unintentionally adding to the equation.

it’s okay, it’s part of the practice!

last week i heard someone say “it’s only an (unconscious) pattern until you identify it, then it becomes a choice” and i find this sentiment applicable in the ways i can inflate the shame around navigating new life each and every day. when i frame it through a kind lens, i find new (manageable for the season) ways to reconnect and care for my creative practice.

Studio Tour | July 26 2025

We just wrapped up our @alternativebalanceyoga classes this morning and thought it was perfect timing to film a studio tour! We have a bunch of fun items in here from some amazing makers and it feels really cozy.

Fever Dream Space is a community-driven creative space hosted by myself (@joel_barnett/@losingthelight, hi hello) and my fiancé @alx.snw in our East Nashville art studio. We’re located in the heart of East and we’re so happy you found us, nice to meet ya!

While we’re technically on summer break to reset and plan the fall schedule, you are more than welcome to check it out, by appointment only - dm to schedule.

Thanks for all of the support and a friendly reminder to visit our website linked in bio and sign up for our mailing list to stay in the loop, we have a bunch of fun things on their way.

thursday july 17 2025

hey folks - !

sheesh, there has been so much life lately, hang in there, we can build better days.

something i’ve been trying to do to offset all the apocalypse is to just make art. it’s just a little more color on these grey days. it’s a little bit of optimism and alchemy.

i undoubtedly do too many things (therapy is a kind way that i work through that) but i’m slowly collecting what i’ve been working on over at www joelwbarnett com | it would mean a lot if you checked it out, i’ll be updating the store this weekend. not just prints either, it’s time to clear out the studio, so i’ll have more originals for sale. thanks for all the support.

Hey all! I have exciting news! Episode #97 of The Nashville Artist podcast 🖼️ 🎶 🎭 is now out, featuring the multitalented Joel Barnett. He’s a painter, woodworker, drummer, and pro BMX rider—the first extreme athlete to join our roster of incredible artists! His insights span multiple industries. 🚲 🎨 🥁 🔨

In this episode, we dive into Joel’s early roots in BMX, exploring wall riding, stalling, and other tricks. He shares his unique visualization techniques, crafting models of skateparks and ramps from wood and cardboard to practice with tech decks and finger bikes. 🛹 🚲 After injuries, he learned to manifest tricks on these handmade models, studying the physics needed to execute them in real life.

A compelling moment arises when Joel reflects on his mantra: “What does right now need?” This phrase helps him stay grounded amidst his busy life. 🧘🏻‍♂️ 🗣️

We also delve into the lore of “Porter Trails,” a mystical spot in East Nashville where massive dirt jumps were built for an unforgettable BMX experience. For Joel and fellow Nashville riders, these dirt mounds were not just jumps; they were sculptures crafted through hard work. 🚲 🪵🚴🏻‍♂️

Joel’s abstract art showcases textures and colors that create relief patterns, emphasizing the importance of letting action guide the process. 🎨 Enjoy!

fall / winter 2024
earlier in the fall, i snagged snagged a $15 canon snappy af from a local thrift shop and put some fuji 400 through it. i always wait too long to develop film, even now i have probably 6 rolls waiting, but these memories came back at the right time.

memorable moments from the Q2+Q3 drafts. lots of bliss, even more pivots to figure things out, tears of joy and then some — all sprinkled with a bunch of gratitude. happy to be here 🤠

it’s actually been three months 😵‍💫

tonight i put on the sigur rós takk documentary and added and subtracted some layers. i thought of my loved ones and their laughter and how much i miss them all. the easy loves.

it’s been about three months in this space and it continues to give in new ways. ive been working through a pretty big life dip and that’s been exhausting. good things, just a lot at once. stuff like finding out new teeth cost $23k with insurance but just taking it one day at a time. its the beauty of it all, but i tend to disappear and we’re working on it in therapy - work and progress

anyway -
open studio tomorrow night
i hope you’ll join
