saturday september 12 / studio thoughts

a quiet morning spent in the studio connected a few thoughts that have been rattling around my brain for the last few weeks.

i’ve had some really big life shifts recently and a different schedule has made studio time a littler harder to access, so i wanted to take a moment to understand a few layers deeper and acknowledge what additional friction i may be unintentionally adding to the equation.

it’s okay, it’s part of the practice!

last week i heard someone say “it’s only an (unconscious) pattern until you identify it, then it becomes a choice” and i find this sentiment applicable in the ways i can inflate the shame around navigating new life each and every day. when i frame it through a kind lens, i find new (manageable for the season) ways to reconnect and care for my creative practice.

“There Is No Escape From This Place”

Finally finding the space to explore lighting context in my work, this weekend I spent my time building the base layers of my newest piece “There Is No Escape From This Place” which will be part of my next solo show this fall titled “Ends Run True To Origins”, a dismantling of narratives, identity and constraints in search of the roots.

When I started painting on glass and mirrors a few years ago, I had always envisioned adding lighting and allowing my work to nestle into various contexts. This piece is the beginning of the work, where these base layers reveal how three different types of lighting sources reimagine the same piece.

Growth Rings

An evening in my previous East Nashville studio making mono prints with @jordanallen_furnituremaker brought this 19” x 24” print of a tree cookie to life.

The blue wash compliments the sharp, detailed portions of the wood grain in a calming, yet powerful manor.

The inviting backyard sunrise this morning offered a little bit more magic as it backlit it in a new and thought-provoking way, allowing a pause to reflect on the relationship this tree once had with the sun, both stretching to meet the other.

recently i decided to be an artist
in the sense of every aspect of the word
devotion to the discovery of my interiority

for my entire life i’ve struggled with identity
it was embedded in me early on and it stuck
along with that, came separation after separation
finding all the wounded parts, the healing of one

for the past few season, connecting with my work
has been like swimming across an ocean blindfolded
and that ocean is inside my head. and the aftermath.

i let so many things get between my passion for creative discovery and connection so this is my commitment to pursue it hell or high water,

in late spring, i collaged my Tama Artwood snare and up next, i’ll be working on my Pig Lite acrylic snare. moving my work onto and into familiar yet new applications is one of my favorite parts of creating. there tends to be a beautiful tension with the process that eventually releases and expands the container of your creativity.

an additional perk of exploring new presentation styles of your work is finding how they become something entirely different along the way. in what can be those uncomfortable unknowns, you’re reminded to tap back into the flow and become less precious, to return to a beginner’s mind.

if you’ve been wanting to explore a new medium or presentation style, take a deep breath and just go.

saturday may 9 2026 | some new books

a new chapter of sharing, thanks for being here

i’ve wanted to move toward more of a ritualistic version of exchanging my creative inspirations in the form of saturday morning studio drop-ins. just quick thoughts on my end and maybe some things that stick on yours.

it’s never felt right to condense my artistry to simply visual work, there is entire ecosystem that creates the support of my work and i care just as much about that, so that’s where i’m headed here.

losing the light has and will always be snapshots of my world and the stories they contain, we’re just expanding to the dvd commentary director’s cut edition.

a quick studio tour in the middle of organizing.
i’m finally getting to give some attention to the studio and things are starting to click. every space i’ve had a studio in has had a transition period (getting shorter and shorter each time) and this studio is settling in. it feels good. in devotion to it, let’s do weekly studio tours with a piece of it for purchase at the end. i like that.
