Campout Spotlight: The Dauphin of Mississippi @lostdauphins

Acclaimed songwriter, the Dauphin of Mississipi has earned accolades wherever he has set up, from the airwaves of Wyoming, to the youtube chanel Western AF. Known as much for his travels as his songwriting, we are excited to have tracked him down for a set a the Campout.

“Mississippi to Wyoming, now New Zealand to Merced, The Dauphin of Mississippi tends to get lost for considerable swaths of time in large and adventuresome rural landscapes, collecting and dispensing songs as such times and occasions call for…then disappearing, and rather abruptly at that.

Don’t miss @lostdauphins performing Saturday, September 26th, at The Good Luck Campout. Day passes and camping available. Tickets at the campout website. Link in the bio

This guy’s t.v. address/speech is going to say that U.S. Senators in GA only won their elections with Chinese collusion. This is him attempting to persuade feeble minded people that voting needs to be federalized.Do not buy into this if you dislike communism as much as you say you do.This would be communism in it’s truest and most ultimate form.Don suffers from his own version of TDS,Trump Delusional Syndrome.Whether you vote red or blue you don’t want this guy to stay in power.Seriously.Republicans,find a (R) candidate that has you,and your country’s interests as his top priority. This guy doesn’t.I can’t understand how someone cannot see that but it’s painfully obvious to most.As much as you may dislike the left and their policies please find someone that has the same ideologies as you that isn’t a madman. Our country is at stake with this man’s egomaniacal, win at any and all cost’s mentality.

WhatFest 2026

Introducing @lostdauphins

Former Laramigo and Kiwi, and currently godless Californian, The Dauphin of Mississippi’ released the E.p. Songs for Children Who Curse produced by Mississippi legend Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nuts ZIppers/Black Keys/Buddy Guy) in 2025, and returns in 2026 releasing songs off the L.P. Watson’s Typewriter, a collection of strange elegies that began as a tribute to his late friend and mentor, the novelist Brad Watson, and centered around songs written on a typewriter that Watson gave him years ago. The 3 Song start grew to a full length treatise on love and loss and all the beautiful and desolate and hilarious places grief can take you. Recorded partly at the University of Otago in Dunedin NZ with steel guitarist John Egenes, Claire Lukens, and Italian stringbender Giacomo Giorli; then at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi with Drive By Truckers bassist Matt Patton; guitarist Cary Hudson of the foundational alt-country band Blue Mountain; drummer Brian Gosdin of the Dexeteens; and Jimbo Mathus on Keys, as well as help from Dauphin bandmate Ray Mitchell IV, and cellist Caleb Bristol. Various songs produced by The D.o.M., Henre Barbe, John Egenes, and Ray Mitchell.

Catch his set on the Songwriter Stage at WhatFest 2026!

“Leavin’” by Dauphin of Mississippi (aka Jason Burge) is one of those songs that you know for a fact was written by someone who has experienced the lonesome of Wyoming.

When we first started this channel, the Dauphin was always a treat to see play live in our small town. He was one of the lyrically richest songwriters in the scene with a heart like none other. He always seemed to believe in the truth in everything he did and if there wasn’t any, he just wouldn’t do it, or yell about it’s bullshit. But this song hits so hard.

Coming from his first album “Prodigal Songs for the End of Days,” the track sets the tone for an album that predicts, cries out and brings your mind to places that only a poet like the Dauphin can do.

There’s a sense of reckoning in the album as a whole, but “Leavin’” feels especially grounded. Listening to it feels like a grand cinematic goodbye at times.

When the Dauphin left Wyoming for brighter shores, there was an emptiness he left behind. But this song stayed. At times it even tempts me to think about my future and impending thoughts of us all “Leavin’” someday.

This video means a lot. Him and our friend John Poland (@john_polands_weylian_gaze ) playing guitar near the fire on the Bison Ranch ( @pmbison ). For one night, it felt like Jason was home with us again, and Wyoming was whole again.

God bless the people who grab you by the arm and make you walk out from under the clouds when it wont quit raining and make you see the good things around you.

Makara way was written toward the end of an extremely dark time. We were living at the top of a hill over Wellington in a microclimate where it always rained. Everyday we were in a cloud. It was so cool and wet my dog Boot molded. Then important people in my life, first my Uncle Time, then my friend and mentor the Mississippi novelist Brad Watson who was a brother to me, then others. Not to mention Covid and a near DOA second album and two ripped ligaments in my knee that kept me from sleeping for months. I really wasn’t in a good place. But then Claire made me leave the house and had one good and simple day that seemed to be a turning point. That day is this song.

#westernaf field recordings take us to some fantastic locations. But nothing has more character and appeal, than the Prairie Monarch Bison ranch (@pmbison). Since we started this little venture of ours, we've had many songwriters pass through our little mountain town. Locations can be slim, but we are always welcomed by the ranch owner Dylan, whenever we need it. We couldn't ask for a better collab partner, or a better friend. A Salute to Dylan and all the buffalo that call Prairie Monarch home. Thank you for sharing your space with us. Hope to make more art with y'all in 2025
