Open Mic Night - Tiger Eye Bar, 22nd September 2026 (PART 2)

(Continued from previous post)

Much like Frog before her, Pink Diamond also paid tribute to John Farnham by way of his hit “Burn For You.” She played another solo cover, before being joined by Dobbo for the final song of her set which was “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. Dobbo then did an acoustic set of his own, and showcased his powerful vocals yet again. Garth O’Mara and Grant Ward closed out proceedings for the evening with their respective sets. For the unaware, Grant is one half of the duo known as The Brannds who have been getting a lot of gigs lately.

As for my set, I teamed up with Rant Acenter and tonight we were known as “The KMart Frog & The Memes.” We were originally going to perform as our band Shadow Force, but unforeseen circumstances forced the late change. The songs in our setlist were ones that we had not played for an extended period of time, but I felt like we did a decent job anyway. My tripod broke moments before we were due to go on stage, so I was unable to obtain any footage of our performance. That’s ok though, as there is always next time. The songs in our setlist were as follows:

1. Perfect (Simple Plan cover)
2. Living Next Door To Alice (Smokie cover)
3. You Belong With Me (Taylor Swift cover)

Open Mic Night - Tiger Eye Bar, 22nd September 2026 (PART 1)

I had not performed at an event such as this for at least a month, due to other music commitments that had taken priority. It was nice to return to this environment again, to take in some live entertainment at the grassroots level. Speaking of those who had not been seen for a while, Brendan kicked off proceedings this evening with a very enjoyable set. What happened next had to be seen to be believed. Georgia is an aspiring country singer-songwriter, and played two covers as well as an original song. She was the second act on the board, and had already stolen the show at that point. She was the complete package both vocally and instrumentally, and she had only been doing this kind of thing for one year! It was absolutely astonishing to witness! She certainly has a very bright future ahead of her, and she is only eleven years old!

Jen-E followed Georgia’s amazing performance with her beautiful a cappella stylings. Frog admitted to feeling a little nervous after what had transpired mere moments before he took to the stage. His set consisted of two songs by John Farnham, in “You’re The Voice” and “Two Strong Hearts.” Frog’s take on Daryl Braithwaite’s iconic take on “The Horses” completed his time in the spotlight for another week. Jash was a duo who tried their hand at some jazz numbers, and they were very entertaining to say the least. Damo performed the first two songs of his set solo, then invited Georgia up for the final number. She once again blew the roof off the venue! Nobody could have possibly predicted that she would get to wow the crowd twice in one night!

Lantern Sessions Open Mic Night - Archive Beer Boutique, 24th August 2026 (PART 2)

(Continued from previous post)

Frog began his set with a rather comedic song, “Banana Phone” by Raffi. I remember a Flash animation from back in that day that featured this song, and it is the kind of tune that gets stuck in your head and lives there indefinitely rent-free! The other two numbers he performed were “I Still Call Australia Home” and Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Later on in the evening, Frog continued to sing “Banana Phone” to anyone who was unfortunate enough to be within earshot! Pink Diamond once again brought something new to the open mic stage, an electric guitar which she told me had the name “Dan.” Or something along those lines anyway. She has officially levelled up now, and this was most evident during her rendition of “Adore You” by Amy Shark.

Other performers on the night included Jin, Mokine, Shane Walters, D-Wayne Beat, Cameron, Steve, and Alex just to name a few. As for my set, I started off with two Barenaked Ladies songs, which were “Light Up My Room” and “Who Needs Sleep?” Georgia Hunter returned to the stage for the final number, which was “Honeybee” by Olivia Rodrigo. I knew of this artist, but had never heard of this song before she suggested we take it on. Given my years of online collaboration, I am used to learning new songs that I had not heard previously. During our time at 4ZZZ earlier that day, Georgia and I had several run-throughs of “Honeybee.” We initially started off both playing (me on keyboard and she on guitar and vocals), but ultimately decided that she would just sing while I played keyboard. That is how we performed it at the open mic, and it went really well! This was another fun night out in West End!

Lantern Sessions Open Mic Night - Archive Beer Boutique, 24th August 2026 (PART 1)

Once again at this event in West End, the sign-up board was practically bursting at the seams once it became available from 6:30pm. Kody Roby was the first performer to take to the stage, meaning that James Scott who organises this open mic did not bust out a few tunes this time around. Kody played and sang some originals and covers, and his band The Idle Minds will be appearing on my radio show “Protis Reviews On Zed Digital.” My interview with them will go to air on Wednesday the 9th of September from 6pm. Kody also accompanied Georgia Hunter, as she sang a cover as well as two of her own original songs which were “Good Enough” and “Almost Maybe.” Georgia and I had been at 4ZZZ in Fortitude Valley that afternoon recording an interview for my radio show, which will hit the airwaves on Wednesday the 2nd of September from 6pm.

Performers who are under the age of 18 always get priority at these open mic events, as they have to leave the venues at a certain time. That was the case with Ethan and Bryce, who were an enthusiastic duo with one playing acoustic guitar and the other singing. The first song of their set was Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”, which was met with massive applause from the audience. Their other two numbers received a rapturous reception as well. The talent on display on any given night, especially from teenagers, is absolutely mind-boggling! Emma Newman followed this duo, and she had only just moved to Brisbane from Hervey Bay. She played an original song on acoustic guitar as she sang, and she finished her set with a cover of the timeless Missy Higgins hit “Scar.”

This isn't just another day in my life… this is a day of displacement and pain.

I wake up to fear, I go to sleep to the sound of shelling, and I spend my days searching for water and food, trying to provide my family with the simplest things that should be available to everyone.

We were displaced, we left our home and our memories, carrying what we could… but we couldn't carry safety with us.

Hunger has worn down our bodies, thirst has exhausted our souls, and fear has stolen the joy of life from us.

Yet, every morning I open my eyes and say: I must stay strong for my family and my child.

I'm not filming this video to tell you about an ordinary day… I'm filming a part of the life of a person worn down by war, but who still clings to hope.

This is my story… this is my day… this is the pain I live with every day. 💔

Lantern Sessions Open Mic Night - Archive Beer Boutique, 10th August 2026 (PART 2)

(Continued from previous post)

Pink Diamond made her debut at this open mic, and she was extremely grateful for the opportunity. Her set included “London Still” by The Waifs, “Creep” by Radiohead (the original version complete with profanity), and “Errol” by Australian Crawl. I’ve said this before, and I”ll say it again. This performer continues to improve every time she gains experience at these events, and is gleefully feeding her addiction in the process. It truly is one of the best addictions that one can possibly have! Other acts on the board included Emma, Sofi K (who I was lucky enough to have a chat with), Mokine, Andrew, Tully and Rob. D-Wayne Beat arrived later on in the night, so he ended up being the last one to perform.

It had been a good six months since I had last performed here, and on that occasion it was Georgia Hunter who joined me on stage for a song. This time around I had not one, but TWO special guests! My set began with a song performed by just me, and then a young lady named Emison joined me for the second number. She had agreed to meet my Shadow Force bandmates and I at this open mic, and she and I got talking about doing a song together here. Emison did an absolutely amazing job, and is keen to potentially join our lineup. I last saw her at an open mic in Chermside back in 2023, and finally she feels the time is right to return to music. The set song of my set saw Emmara return to the stage, and it was a real honour to perform alongside her for the very first time! My full setlist was as follows:

1. Go West (Pet Shop Boys cover)
2. My Immortal (feat. Emison) (Evanescence cover)
3. Cold Heart (feat. Emmara) (Elton John & Dua Lipa cover)

Lantern Sessions Open Mic Night - Archive Beer Boutique, 10th August 2026 (PART 1)

It was a welcome return to this open mic in West End for some, and a memorable debut for others. The sign-up board filled up very quickly when it became available half an hour before the music kicked off, so my cohorts and I could be considered lucky to grab the first few spots. As the host of this event, James Scott did his customary thing of opening proceedings with a cover of “Breakeven” by The Script. That song not only tested his belting ability in his higher vocal register, but also his falsetto prowess. The latter was flawlessly crystal clear, and it had been several months since I had seen and heard him bust out a tune.

Frog was one performer who made a rare appearance at this venue, and he really appreciated the audience’s adulation. He is now a veteran of the local scene, having racked up his 200th open mic recently. He started off his set with “In The Summertime” by Thirsty Merc, which was also the theme song for the Channel 10 TV show Bondi Rescue. He then followed that up with “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield, a perennial favourite of his which has been known to drive his fellow bandmates crazy! Frog’s set concluded with the timeless hit “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls. This guy absolutely loves performing, and it clearly shows each and every time he steps on to the stage!

Emmara had not been to this venue for an extended period of time, and was welcomed back to the fold by James with open arms in perhaps the most literal way possible! She had spent that afternoon at 4ZZZ in Fortitude Valley, recording an interview with me for my radio show “Protis Reviews On Zed Digital.” Her open mic set kicked off with “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera, and in my opinion she matched the original artist’s vocal delivery. Next up was “Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson, and he is one of her biggest inspirations when it comes to songwriting and music in general. Her time on stage concluded with her recently-released single “Carmelita”, which came out on the 30th of July. It is always a treat to witness such a fine performer as Emmara!

Today is my birthday… but I don't feel there's anything to celebrate.

Another year has passed, and the war continues to leave its mark on every corner of our lives. Memories of the home we lost, days filled with fear, and dreams postponed—all of this makes this birthday unlike any I've ever known.

Open Mic Night - Tiger Eye Bar, 28th July 2026 (PART 2)

(Continued from previous post)

Jen-E sang her usual a cappella, which as always was met with a rousing reception. Pink Diamond continues to show her progress each and every week, and it is very much appreciated. Colleen South took to the stage with her trusty ukulele, and proceeded to bust out some tunes. As did Garth O’Mara, but his instrument of choice was an acoustic guitar. John took his turn on the stage, as did Varinia Street and Clare Cowley. I had not seen Clare since last year during BIGSOUND, so it was lovely to catch up with her. She hinted at having a go on the provided keyboard, and I have seen her do just that in the past at her gigs.

Rent Acenter and I were originally going to go by the name “The Rock & The Memes”, as a reference to the WWE wrestler portrayed by Dwayne Johnson. For some reason though, the initial order on the sign-up board was changed and so the stage name became “The Rocket & The Memes.” One of the songs of our set encouraged audience participation, and it went down a real treat! As did the other two numbers in our set, for that matter. We performed the following on stage at Tiger Eye this evening:

1. Jessie's Girl (Rick Springfield cover)
2. Living Next Door To Alice (Smokie cover)
3. Stacy’s Mom (Fountains Of Wayne cover)

Open Mic Night - Tiger Eye Bar, 28th July 2026 (PART 1)

Two very special occasions were celebrated at this event in Petrie Terrace. It was Dobbo’s birthday on this day, and he chose to spend it at his favourite open mic. His children were also in attendance, and naturally they lapped up their father’s performance. He began his set with a short original birthday song in the style of Alice In Chains. Then he launched into a song that was actually by Alice In Chains. Dan Whittam, the host of this event, joined Dobbo on bass throughout his time on stage. Colleen South tinkled the ivories, which will now always be provided by Dan for this open mic. The thumping sound of the cajon completed the quartet.

The other performer to celebrate was Frog, who racked up his 200th open mic this evening! It truly is a remarkable achievement, which Dan initially honoured with a bag of Freddo Frogs. Then he presented Frog (the performer) with a special trophy in the shape of a microphone, and it had the words “Frog 200th Open Mic” engraved on it. Dan always goes above and beyond to celebrate those magical milestones. Two of the songs in Frog’s setlist were “Dumb Things” by Paul Kelly, and “TIp Of My Tongue” by Diesel. Here’s to another 200 open mics for this passionate musician!

Mark Shannon started off his set with “Mr. Moonlight”, which was one of many songs to be covered by The Beatles. His remaining two numbers were proven crowd favourites as well. Catfish, consisting of Cynthia and Joe, have been performing at least one open mic each week. It was a welcome return to Tiger Eye for them, and two of their songs were “Take On Me” by A-ha, and the timeless classic “Black Velvet.” Catfish’s take on “Take On Me” is a stripped-back acoustic affair, and it sounds even more stunningly beautiful every time I hear it! The duo did a stellar job with “Black Velvet” as well, and I have also heard The Brannds tackle that one with great success!

After months of war, bombing, hunger, and fear, and after days when I thought all hope had vanished... God blessed me with the most precious gift of my life.

Welcome, Ryan, my first child. 💙

You came into this world at a time that was far from easy for us. While many were welcoming their children into warm homes, we welcomed you with fear in our hearts, trying to provide you with the most basic necessities of life.

Despite everything we've been through, the moment we first saw you was enough to ease some of our pain and give us a new reason to hold on to life and persevere.

But the painful truth is that our journey isn't over yet. We still face harsh conditions, struggling to secure milk, diapers, and the basic needs of our newborn, amidst war and deprivation.

If you can help us, or even just share our story with others, you will give Ryan a better start in life.

Thank you to everyone who stood by us, prayed for us, and helped bring a smile to our family's face.

Welcome to the world, Ryan... and may your life be even more beautiful than the beginning of your life. 🤍

Miss Demeanour Open Mic Night - 6th July 2026 (PART 3)

(Continued from previous post)

I was making my first visit to Miss Demeanour since my birthday! On that occasion I had interviewed Ella Hartwig for my radio show “Protis Reviews On Zed Digital”, before heading on to the open mic. This time around, it was the turn of none other than Dan and his partner Lisa to be interviewed by me! We had such an amazingly fun time, and that conversation will air on Wednesday the 22nd of July from 6pm, just three days before Honey Badger Events holds their “Get Gigs Workshop” at Milton Common.

I ended up travelling with Dan and Lisa straight from 4ZZZ to Miss Demeanour, and it was so nice of them to offer me a lift. My set at the open mic began with two Barenaked Ladies songs from their album “Stunt.” My brother had gifted that body of work to me for my 17th birthday, so I ended up listening to it over and over! I had not heard those songs for several years if not decades, so I was amazed to be able to remember them at all! I had only started practising the first song of my set on the morning of this open mic, so the whole day and night was a really fun one for me! My full setlist of songs that I performed at Miss Demeanour were as follows:

1. Light Up My Room (Barenaked Ladies cover)
2. Who Needs Sleep? (Barenaked Ladies cover)
3. Can You Forgive Her? (Pet Shop Boys cover)
