Springing forward! You spent last month reconnecting with old friends, talking to strangers, and taking moments of pause, wherever you could find them. At the link in bio, take a closer look at March in Photos from i-D readers around the world.

Conversation 19 / Niki Stevens / Allen Gardens, East London

"This reminded me of the energising simplicity of doing something I am interested in and sharing it with people. Is that really an easy way of describing what it is to be an artist? Recently I’ve received so many disheartening rejections from applications to exhibitions and residencies, but really all I want to do is follow the things which fascinate me and then connect to others and my environment through them. This relates to something else I talked about with Niki – she said that when we do the things our bodies want, we are building our self-worth, because we think we are worth doing what we want. This feels confusingly simple when I write it, but I realise how much time I spend doing things I think other people want. I didn’t connect it to how that could impact my self-worth."

To read my full reflections on the conversation, head to my gallery of conversations (link in my bio).

In January 2023 I started a conversations project during my residency at Applecart Arts. I sit down and have a conversation with someone I am interested to have a conversation with. Whilst there might be particular things I am interested in, I don’t have questions planned in advance and what happens is organic. Whilst we talk, I paint. What I share here is the painted/drawn outcome of the conversation. Afterwards, I write up my reflections which come from the conversation. Then, they go into my gallery of conversations...

Still Life

Direction, photography & posing: @despina_mikoniati & @loversoflies

What am I
Am I a tree or a rock or even a wave
Am I alive or dead
How many aspects do I bring and which of them do I own
Am I even real or not
What is my synthesis and how do I exist

Hello! Yolanda @yolandaliou here.

Today I’m sharing my personal project “Let Us Cherish One Another”.

Being an artist in London, one of the biggest capitals, is both exhilarating and challenging.

How does one stay sane amidst the competitive nature of this industry?
Creativity is the key.

Alongside commercial commissions, consistently pursuing personal projects keeps artists on their creative path. Finding support and a safe space is vital for self-care. By not being bound to paid clients, artists can freely explore their creativity.

I collaborated with @xristinaprompona and @loversoflies talented artists and dear friends. Together, with my constant focus on human forms and movement, we brainstormed, shot, and had a blast.

Art is therapy—a refuge for the soul.

It allows artists to transcend challenges and express beauty and truth. In the demanding landscape of London’s art scene, resilience, support, and belief in the power of creativity are essential. Embrace it, foster a community, and find solace and purpose in your art.

Reclaiming Public Space

Photography: @loversoflies
Styling and Make up: @loversoflies
Models: @daphneandthefuzz
@xristinaprompona

In this project the models are posing within all their power to be seen and to create new narratives about public spaces, which usually carry with them certain expectations and gender dynamics. From the local street market to a barber shop, where femininity is seen as an addition to someone’s house, to someone’s life, to someone’s sight, it is now breaking away from the comfort of the viewer by manifesting in unexpected shapes and forms. Challenging the embodiment of these toxic narratives, which are keeping us small, can allow us to be more present and honour our bodies. The act of reclaiming has to happen with consciousness and awareness around how we carry ourselves in different spaces and identify how certain expectations have been put on us, and reflect on how we mindlessly serve them.
