Fifteen years. Five cities. Bachelors to PhD, tarantulas to coyotes. Two tenure track faculty positions (almost a third). Eight years on the tenure-brick road. Met the love of my life. Two kids (growing too fast). Thousands of nights, pages, and cups of coffee. Worked at world-class institutions. Collaborated with world-class people. Wisdom from my family. Strength from the ancestors. A whole village behind me. Reminding me to pay attention to the joy in the journey.

Feeling reflective as a newly-tenured Associate Professor at UC Berkeley! One of the most storied public universities - the same one my family introduced me to as a kid. They taught me to strive for the universe, learn from the stars, commune with the space dust inside and out. I’m grateful for the chance to be here.

No doubt, the road to tenure was anything but smooth or expected. It was filled with personal, professional, cultural, emotional, and spiritual trials. Navigating the hidden curriculum, combating the imposter syndrome and rejection, staying resilient with every failure and misstep, negotiating my health with each grant or pub of the moment, and learning to discern what deserves my time NOW versus letting go of the things that weren’t for me. All of it while navigating life as a husband, a father, a son, and a friend others could count on.

This milestone is a testament to my kin, my community, my lab, my geography. People that believed in me, supported me, fed my stomach and soul, told me I was on the right track, corrected me when I got out of pocket, and challenged me to be better. The people that showed me what true resilience was. Those that reminded me about great power and the responsibility that comes with it. I hope to pay your kindness and generosity forward.

And so it goes - I flew across the world to walk the ancestral soil of my Ghanaian kin, for the first time, to properly receive the news. Somehow the phrase “I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams” just doesn’t fully articulate my deep sense of purpose and gratitude.

Thank you everyone, and excited for the new adventures to come!

Last night, I had the honor to attend an amazing event for the organization Restore. Dr. Obeng and his team of medical professionals help underserved communities all over the world with free plastic surgeries. I was blown away by their work. Dr. Obeng was the doctor who created the solution to help the young lady who had gorilla glue in her hair. #Godisgood #Ilovehelpinghearts #blessingsonblessings
