Artists and partygoers take a bow 🙇‍♂️. Thank you to everyone who supported our Masked Entertainer event last night. All for MND research. It was a night that was both massively entertaining and moving. A year in the making.

Final total to be announced soon. However, Stuart, Hazel, Lynn and I are extremely grateful to all the artists, and of course those who bid to enable us raise £2,736 from art for MND research. Over £5,000 profit came from the auction.

I am delighted that my first ever student / travelling companion / mate Steve Lowen (@lowenstephen) is having a solo show of his exquisite pencil drawings at Patchings Art Centre in Nottinghamshire from the 6th August. I’m sure the works will all be for sale and I know he’s open to being commissioned if there’s anything that takes your fancy.

💐 Flowers 💐 (post 1 of 2)

Fronteer Gallery is proud to present 'Flowers', an exhibition featuring over 30 UK based artists, each looking at floral life.

An inherently joyous subject that is full of life, energy, vibrancy and nature, the subject of flowers has graced artistic practice for centuries. While this exhibition does touch on the beauty of floral life, it also looks at how flowers can represent cultures, house portraiture, evoke environmental issues and be used as a means of language. This exhibition is a full assessment of flowers, seen within a contemporary art context and delivered in a wide variety of artistic styles.

You can catch 'Flowers' at @fronteergallery until 8th August. We're open 11-4 Tuesday - Thursday this week.

I am delighted to have “Familiar Territory” accepted into @prosaic97 second show entitled “Further Speculation” which follows on from “Speculative Proposals” which I so enjoyed being in last month. Sheffield is indeed becoming “familiar territory” for me! This show begins at Bloc Studios on Monday 20th straight after the last one comes down. These small micro shows exhibit a range of different artists’ work in an attempt to explore points of difference as talented artist and perceptive curator @swseanwilliams puts it. It has been a hugely rewarding experience to engage with these talented Sheffield based artists. Again my point of interest is where a drawing becomes a painting or a drawing is regarded as a painting and whether there is indeed any distinction worth making and if so on what basis: is it in terms of the materials used? The extent (coverage?!) of mark making? The intention of the artist? The process employed? Are paintings more valuable than drawings and if so why? Do our responses not reveal more about us than the artwork itself? Isn’t painting an extension of mark making and drawing but an illustration of one form of mark making - a minimalist form of painting arguably - perhaps we should instead focus on the idea of mark making and draw no valued judgements between painting and drawing. How we view these things and the judgments we make seem arbitrary and highly speculative. It is this that lies in part behind the thought process of this small work (as in many others). I have two drawings as part of "Speculative Proposals’ at Prosaic Projects Gallery

"Most artists sketch, make preparatory drawings, draft out ideas. It is an essential tool. The intention of this micro-exhibition of drawings by painters is to present a range of approaches - from fully-realised, highly-finished pieces through to the scribbled ideas that inform significant work, with the great breadth of styles that lie in between.

Drawing is inclusive – anyone can grab a pencil or begin drawing shapes with your finger on a steamed up window, dragging a stick through sand at the beach, doodling in the margins. It can be therapeutic, a means of accessing the subconscious; a formal enquiry into form, composition; it is the interplay between acquiring knowledge and freeing the imagination. In the spirit of the preliminary sketch, this show is an exploration of these possibilities" @swseanwilliams
