My Graduate Collection!

‘Lughnasa’
I created this collection based on the festival of Lughnasa, which marks the beginning of the harvest. In my textile processes I aimed to reflect traditions such as bonfires that play a central role in the celebrations. I was strongly inspired by Brian Friel’s ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’, inspired by Friel’s time spent in Glenties.

All materials used in my collection were kindly sponsored by @magee1866

A key material I used was selvedge, a byproduct of the weaving process that is typically seen as waste.

Last night we were proud to present the Cyril Morgan Creativity Award to the incredibly talented Alicia Castro @4liciacastro_designs ✨

Since 2021, we have had the privilege of collaborating with the @ba_fashion_lsad & @lsad_fashknit . This year we had the privilege of watching their creative journeys unfold from initial concept through to final design. Seeing the passion, innovation and talent is so inspiring.

A huge congratulations to Alicia and to all of the students who showcased their work last night 👏 and a huge congratulations to Alan, Linda and all of the lecturers for putting on an amazing show.

🌟BÁINÍN🌟
“Irish wool is a classified waste product in Ireland and the wool industry has been struggling because of the increase and the accessibility of synthetic fibers and wool from warmer climates, which is less coarse due to a lower micron count.

“Sarah’s graduate collection “BÁINÍN” is focused on the issues surrounding Irish wool with emphasis on the Galway Wool, (Ireland’s only native breed of sheep). She has researched the issues regarding Irish wool which is that it is quite itchy in its raw form but believes that the structure that this coarse, raw material provides is that of very few biodegradable, garment-suitable-materials.

“Wool is the original fibre and is fire retardant, reduces dust mites, temperature controlling and it is biodegradable. Wool has been proven to be a slow releasing fertilizer to soil. We are constantly being told that Irish wool (which is quite coarse due to our cold climate) is not suitable for high fashion. This collection was a research on how we could incorporate other materials with traceable Irish wool in order to make garments that could be worn.”
