Congratulations to the recipients of the Neil and Arlene Kestner College of Science Superior Graduate Student Scholarship! 🎉

The scholarship recognizes graduate students for their achievements and promise in materials science. It honors the late LSU Professor Emeritus Neil Kestner, a pioneer in theoretical physical and computational chemistry whose influential work on electron transfer was recognized by Rudolph “Rudy” Marcus during his 1992 Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Kestner was inducted into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction in 2017.

This year’s recipients are:
▪️Thimira Kandabadage Don, Chemistry PhD student, Baranets Research Group
▪️ Mohammed Mehedi Hasan, Physics PhD student, Magana-Loaiza Research Group
▪️ Md. Abdullah Al Mahmud, Chemistry PhD student, Pojman Research Group

Congratulations to these outstanding #LSUScience graduate students!

@lsuphysastro REU Program's Astronomy Night 2026. Thanks to Rob Hynes for the public talk, Colin Turley, Mohammad Boroumand, and Scott Cadwallader for helping with telescopes, Dana Browne for the amateur radio demonstration, and all our participants for embracing daring, dangerous, or just tedious, duties to make the night happen!

Due to unavoidable circumstances we have a change of speaker, but otherwise @lsuphysastro Astronomy Night is going ahead as planned. I (Rob Hynes) will talk about the history of searches for black holes from the earliest 18th Century ideas to JWST observations of some of the most distant objects ever seen.

The weather forecast is looking great for sky viewing!

The @lsuphysastro REU program is running again this year! We're delighted to announce our annual Astronomy Night next Thursday, June 25 at 6:30pm in Nicholson Hall 130. This year we have Dr. Tabetha Boyajian giving a talk entitled 'Where's the Flux, Now?' For those who don't get the reference, this will be an update on the status of 'Tabby's Star', dubbed the Most Mysterious Star in the Galaxy. As usual, this will be followed by demos by the REU students, liquid nitrogen ice-cream, a ham radio demonstration, and viewing from the Landolt Astronomical Observatory (@lao.lsu) (weather permitting).

For nearly two decades, scientists have searched for evidence that high-energy gamma rays could escape from superluminous supernovae — some of the brightest explosions in the universe. Now, LSU researchers helped uncover a signal that may finally provide answers. Using NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, the team identified evidence of gamma rays emerging from a rare cosmic explosion, opening a new window into the extreme physics powering these extraordinary stellar events. 🌌✨

🎓 Graduating Student Spotlight: Dillon Harris

Meet Dillon, who will graduate from LSU with a B.S. in physics and a minor in nuclear science. A first-generation college graduate, Dillon began his undergraduate journey at LSU at 27 years old while balancing life as a husband, father, full-time student, and researcher. This fall, he will continue his education in the Ph.D. program in medical physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he plans to focus on neutron therapy techniques and improving radiotherapy outcomes.

🧪 What he loves most about science:
Dillon is passionate about medical physics because of its interdisciplinary nature and meaningful impact. He loves that the field combines topics ranging from radiation biology to pure physics while contributing directly to diagnosing and treating cancer. For Dillon, medical physics perfectly blends scientific curiosity with the opportunity to help others.

🔬 Research and discovery:
Working with Dr. Thomas Kutter, Dillon helped build an automated optical inspection system to perform quality assurance checks on electronics for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a major international research collaboration. Last semester, he had the opportunity to present his research progress to visiting MIT researchers joining the DUNE project, an experience he found both exciting and rewarding.

🌍 Beyond the classroom:
Outside of academics, Dillon loves spending time outdoors with his family. Inspired by Steve Irwin growing up, he enjoys searching for snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders, and other wildlife—and even keeps a running tally of the species he finds around his neighborhood.

📣 His advice to students:
“Make your education your own. Don’t feel pressured to follow the exact same path as someone else. Exploring different topics that genuinely interest you will make your education and research more exciting, and you’ll learn more because of it.”

Chloe DiTusa knew she loved #physics from an early age – her father, brother and sister are physicists. But she’s applying physics to an area many of us might not readily associate with physics: cancer medicine!

Working at @marybirdperkins during her PhD, DiTusa built a web-based dashboard to help compute the metrics needed to modify radiation dose and treatment plans on a daily basis for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, because a patient’s anatomy is not static.

She will soon graduate and move to medical residency at @univmiami!
