FIELD TRIALS: Ron Hood: “I’ve been teaching wilderness survival for over 40 years. And in all of that time, I visited a lot of different primitive tribes. And among those primitive tribes, one thing stands out in every case. They all use a big knife. Why? Because a big knife can do a small job, but a small knife cannot do a big job.” I’d classify the @wcknivesllc Tracks as a mid-sized camp/survival knife. It’s not a huge blade, but it’s no lightweight and is capable of some heavy work. Recently I crafted a figure 4 deadfall while testing another blade and thought I’d crack one out with the Tracks. This one was quick and dirty but the balance and edge geometry made it very easy to maintain control of the blade. Next up for testing trials is some “big knife” work. Perhaps a 1-stick fire…. More to come. #wcknives #campknife #survivalknife #primitivetraps #madeintheusa🇺🇸

Blade Show had a bittersweet ending with the news of Reuben’s passing

He was a great friend, but also a mentor to me. Lauren said he came into my life with Divine Timing. We started to talk just a few months before I quit my job as a cop and went full time with KBN.

He was always there to lend an ear and give sagely advice when needed. He also knew when I needed to just learn things the hard way. He taught me so many life lessons that will never be forgotten.

Reuben didn’t tell anyone what was going on, as usual he kept his condition tight to the chest. When I first barged into his hospital room he still didn’t want to see anyone, but he also said “I had a feeling you’d be the first one to walk through those doors”. Reuben and I both shared those stubborn traits.

I made sure to tell Reuben how much he changed all our lives in hopes that he can truly understand how much of a blessing he was to all of us.

I chose the song My Way because this was playing in the pub after one of the last visits seeing him in the hospital. I was the only one in the crew to notice the song over the speakers, and I had a hard time not breaking down. I don’t think there is a person who embodied that song more than Reuben.

I have a hard time believing his passing on the final day of Blade Show wasn’t something from a higher power. He knew we had to make it through the show, but he gave us the time to all be together in mourning. He was always putting everyone before himself, never wanting to be a burden.

The last photo is my favorite of RB. I took that last summer on our float plane trip. He said that he never got good photos of himself, since he’s always behind the camera.

I know I’ll see him again, standing there drinking coffee (or cider) out of his classic

I was fortunate to be able to spend the day in the woods with my good friend @ltmike310 and some great blades. The @coldsteelknives Trailmaster needs no explanation. It is a big blade that can do darn near anything asked of it. The @rmj_usa Shrike is a tactical tomahawk that is just as at home in the woods as it was in the GWOT. The @wcknivesllc Fieldlore is a carving, slicing powerhouse of a belt knife. All@of these tools are amazingly useful and a real joy to use. They are each at close to the pinnacle of their cutting genres. #bushcraft #woodsman #easternwoodlands #rmjtactical #trailmaster
