Here is a quick look at how my journey took its most significant curve yet. 2 1/2 years ago, I had my life altered even more photographically, and it has never looked the same. Nor would I ever want it to be.

I’ve always been a die-hard New Yorker in my heart, but I've never actually lived or taken up residence there. But the umpteen times I’ve been there have only increased my inner drive and mentality to keep getting there at every chance I got. The photo possibilities are endless.

I had already been a fan and follower of @philpenman 📷 for many years. When the opportunity showed up to take what became my first workshop with him, I bounced on it. It was cold and dreary springtime weather, but you know nothing holds him back from being out in the streets of NYC. I showed up at 6:15 a.m., wandering with my first Leica camera in hand, proving to myself that I was new to being really entrenched in street photography.

Recently, I brought these files up and edited them so they would tell more of a story. While I still plan to get the M11 monochrome camera, these were taken with the Leica SL2. I’ll never look back.

POV: Someone catches you photographing them… and doesn’t look away.

For a second, you both know exactly what’s happening. They see the camera, you expect them to turn away, but they hold your gaze and let the moment continue.

That silent connection is what makes street photography so powerful. No posing. No directions. Just two strangers sharing a moment that may never happen again.

And that is what I love about street photography. It reminds me that ordinary life is never actually ordinary when you slow down long enough to notice it.

Would you take the photo or lower your camera?📸

Phil O’Brien!!!! April’s Hell’s Kitchen Legend.
The photojournalist who moved from England to Hells Kitchen, NY and made an impact in my neighborhood in a major way. Phil alongside @simonkirrane founded @w42st in 2014. The magazine that inspired my platform The Kitchen’s Open. I remember collecting my first few magazines and consistently seeing the name Phil on it. Who’s this Phil guy, and how is he connecting with all these amazing people in HK. I knew our paths would cross someday. When that day happens, it meant my page was on the right track. My hard work was seen. Finally after 3 years of starting The Kitchens Open I got to meet the man at the 2023’s W42ST award show. From that moment on I’d bump into Phil more frequently. I admired his work, always showing up, always smiling. When I see Phil, I see him surrounded by love… Here’s your flowers Phil. Thanks for the inspiration and helping put HELLS KITCHEN on the map.
