CONGRATULATIONS are also due to several of our interns and “returners”, past and present. At least three graduated this past weekend with their Bachelors degrees. We are so very proud of them and can’t wait to see where they go next!

Happy Graduation to our amazing class of 2026. While we are super excited to see your journey continue, yesterday was a bit bittersweet as we watched you cross that stage. You are all incredible people and we couldn’t be more proud of your accomplishments. Thank you for everything these past couple of years, yall have set the bar really high!

And with that #researchweek 2026 comes to a close. It has been an incredible week of scholarship and research and we are super proud of all of our students. We’re also excited to announce that project leads Hannah DeGraw, Juliette Rodrigue, and Will Fausnaugh as well as field tech, Abbey Shields were recognized as one of the judges choice for their posters this week. We also want to take a moment to congratulate again our very own Dr. Atkinson for his mentor of the year award. We can’t wait for research week 2027! #herpetology #ucfresearch #undergraduateresearch

A little identification practice never hurts! Yesterday many of our project leads hosted a mini ID workshop to help some of our new cohort and to talk about the research they’ve done with these species on campus. #naturalhistory #herpetology #undergraduateresearch #ucf

❤️ Happy Valentines Day from the #ucfturtlelab! ❤️

We spent the weekend doing what we love — catching and counting turtles in Port Canaveral as part of our semi-annual “turtle round-up”.

In all, a solid weekend. We caught 45 little green turtles, spotted a load of sharks, tarpon, snook, and other cool wildlife. One little green goblin was observed chowing down on some discarded pompano! Weather was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better crew ❤️🐢

For this project, we spend two days catching and assessing turtles, marking them with chalk paint numbers so we don’t recapture them a second time. Then on day three, we run a survey to count how many numbered versus unnumbered turtles we spot. This allows us to calculate a rough estimate of turtles in the area. 🐢 🐢 🐢
