Carroll B. Williams Jr. (1929-2024) was the first African-American to receive a doctorate in forestry and entomology, the first African-American scientist to be hired by the U.S. Forest Service, and among the first African-Americans to be a part of the environmental science and forestry faculties at both Yale and UC Berkeley. Featuring stunning 16mm cinematography, this experimental documentary explores the life and legacy of a groundbreaking scientist through intimate conversation with his daughter and grandchild.

Markus’ great-great-great-grandfather invented the nutcracker in 1870 and thus began the “Original Füchtner Company”. For 150 years, each son of each father has taken the company over and then passed it down. Today, Markus Füchtner is the self-described ‘Nutcracker King’. Markus trains his adolescent son to become the ninth generation while discussing his family’s unique history.

DAYLIGHT (dir. Jon Kasbe)

Serving a life sentence for murder, Joe Garcia finds an unexpected lifeline in the music of Taylor Swift. From inside his prison cell, her songs reconnect him to memories of a woman he once loved and to the possibility that his life might still hold meaning. When an essay Joe writes about that connection unexpectedly goes viral after being published in The New Yorker, it sets off a chain of events that brings his story to the outside world. As Joe prepares for his first real chance at freedom in decades, the film follows his emotional journey toward accountability, reconnection, and redemption. Daylight is an intimate portrait of how art can reach across the most unlikely boundaries and open the door to a second chance

Some people chase the spotlight. Fernanda Toledo is more interested in making sure the spotlight lands exactly where it's supposed to. As our new staff Online Conform Editor, she's the calm, detail-oriented force helping projects make the leap from editorial to final delivery—without ever losing the creative spark that made them special in the first place.

When she's not piecing together final masters, she's chasing live blues music, exploring the open road on her motorcycle, or convincing us all to stay a little more curious. We sat down with @sundancekid to chat about life in finishing, the art of solving puzzles, and the adventures waiting beyond the edit suite. Full interview linked in b!o.

Since 2024, Filmmaker Mixer Reviews has covered the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology, and every year ends up telling a story beyond the films.

The first year, our correspondent covered the festival before heading to UT Austin. The second year, I wrote reviews while saying goodbye to my father-in-law. This year, I’ve been balancing coverage with my mom’s illness. Thankfully, she’s doing well, and I’m grateful to be wrapping up another festival.

Life keeps happening, but so does art.

PFCAT continues to remind me why independent film matters. Every film I’ve seen has been thoughtful, creative, and worth watching. One day I hope to experience it in person. Until then, I’ll keep celebrating the filmmakers from afar.

The latest reviews of this short is now live in Short Sips at filmmakermixer.com.

This documentary short is what encourages me to be honest about my feelings for this festival. That exploding whale story is filled with interconnected stories. We are communal animals and story telling is always been part of the human experience.

What do pizza, shoegaze, Octavia E. Butler, sound design, and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos eaten with chopsticks have in common? Somehow, they all make perfect sense when you’re talking to Felicia Diaz.

Since joining @mirrormirrorfinish as Senior Finishing Producer, Felicia has brought a calm, collaborative approach to every project that comes her way. She’s passionate about the craft of finishing, believes sound is one of the most underrated parts of storytelling, and always seems to have a thoughtful answer ready. We caught up with Felicia to talk finishing, favorite films, dream dinner guests, and what might just be the most important tool in post-production. Link in bio. 😎
