My darling, eccentric, idiosyncratic, infuriating, adored Dad died on Saturday morning. It was peaceful and painless after months of struggling.

From an early age Dad taught me how to look, really look, at works of art. He was an old master drawings dealer all of his adult life having landed a traineeship at Sotheby's after putting on a DIY show of prints that caught Carmen Gronau's attention. He quickly became a junior partner, taking sales in Italian, which he didn't speak, and being applauded for his bravery..

Shortly after I arrived Dad set up his own gallery in Bond Street, where he remained until retiring a few years ago, most recently working alongside James Faber @dayfabermasterdrawings.

To the end he was checking out drawings for sale and advising friends and colleagues on whether something was worth buying.

His memory was phenomenal. He could tell you who had bought a drawing for what collection and when.... and whether it was any good. His love and knowledge of Rembrandt, amongst many other artitsts would have gained him a PhD.

He never went to University, national service put paid to that. He leaned by looking, listening and reading. I learned so much. He'd bring drawings home, and ask us to tell him what we thought, and then we 'd discuss it. I was probably at art school when I figured out how special this gift he'd given me was.

He painted throughout his life. The hardest thing right now is seeing the empty chair at his painting desk, and not hearing the squeak of it as he sat back to think.

I can't quite believe he's gone.
