As a holistic feminist therapist getting my PhD, I am constantly looking at how we can bridge modern clinical frameworks with the ancient, indigenous roots of healing. Western psychology has a habit of pulling individuals out of their ecosystems and bloodlines, treating mental health as something that only happens inside a vacuum.
But true, decolonized mental healthcare requires us to look at the ancestral architectures of wellness. If we want to help clients heal somatic and systemic trauma, we have to look at the frameworks that came long before the DSM.
Here are 3 books that completely reframe what “therapy” actually means, and why ancestral wisdom belongs in the clinical container:
📖 1. Burning Woman by Lucy H. Pearce @lucyhpearce
Essential reading for understanding the collective “sisterhood wound” and the historical policing of feminine autonomy. This text is an incredible tool for examining how modern clinical spaces often pathologize passion, intuition, and somatic rage as “dysregulation” instead of seeing them as vital life force.
📖 2. The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock @arinmurphyhiscock
While it presents as a gentle folk guide, this is secretly a masterclass in eco-somatics and grounding. Our nervous systems are millions of years old and genetically optimized to regulate through simple, local earth-attunement. This book is a wonderful on-ramp for helping clients tap into bioregional plant safety and seasonal rhythms as tools for stabilization.
📖 3. Walking in the Secret Manner by Mark Saint Pierre & Tilda Long Soldier
A profound, deeply respectful look into the holy, complex spiritual and psychological healing traditions of the Lakota holy women. This text completely shatters Eurocentric psychological structures, offering an invaluable perspective on medicine, community care, dream incubation, and non-Western lineages of profound psychological restoration.
We cannot heal the modern psyche by ignoring the deep roots of where we come from. Reclaiming ancestral frameworks isn’t a trend it’s a clinical necessity. #reading #books #therapist #feminism #healing therapy psychology
