What does it mean to PlayHerWay?

From football fields and basketball courts to coaching, academia and community leadership, these women and allies share what it means to create a world where girls are supported to play, speak, lead and choose their own futures.

Their experiences are different, but their message is shared: every girl deserves the confidence to take up space, the support to use her voice and the freedom to pursue the future she imagines for herself.

#internationaldayofthegirl gave us a moment to amplify this message but PlayHerWay continues in schools and communities beyond the day and beyond this video.

Over the coming days, we will share each contributor’s story individually.

Which reflection stayed with you?

Her Game. Her Voice. Her Future.

Today, on International Day of the Girl, we share the story at the heart of PlayHerWay.

This year’s theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights,” reminds us that every girl deserves the right to remain a child, to learn, to play, to feel safe, to use her voice, and to imagine a future that is truly her own.

Through #PlayHerWay, we are creating spaces where girls can build confidence, speak up, support one another, understand safety, lead with courage, and see new possibilities for themselves on and beyond the field.

Their stories are joined by women in sport and allies who believe that girls should not be limited by expectations, stereotypes, or futures chosen for them.

A girl’s future should be hers to imagine, shape, and pursue.

Her Game. Her Voice. Her Future.

This is PlayHerWay.

The Princess from Kumasi.

A princess felt right to me — not simply because of royalty, but because inheritance is something you carry before you ever decide what to do with it.
I imagined someone coming from Ghana carrying something that could not be packed in a suitcase.
Inheritance.

The coat itself was built around that tension. Leather and suede occupying the same garment. Pearl and gold. Something refined, something strong. Something that could belong to an old world and still walk comfortably through New York.

I originally made it for a man.
Then she put it on.
And suddenly the idea I had written for the clothes was no longer enough.
She didn’t remove the royalty from the look. She changed my understanding of where the royalty was coming from.
The clothes had their own intention, but so did the person wearing them.

That stayed with me.
Because maybe this is what happens with everything we inherit.
Culture. Language. Faith. Clothing. Expectations.
We receive them carrying the intentions of people who came before us, and then our own bodies, experiences and lives begin changing what they mean.
I thought I was dressing her like royalty.
Then I looked at the photographs and realized the clothes had very little to do with it.

Maybe inheritance works the same way.
We don’t only carry what was given to us.
We participate in what it becomes.

Last runway of the season almost became lost files (big thank you to @filmme.studio). Walking in Atelier Raushan @anuarbekova_raushan on 9/13 for @QK_Models and @Unique_Fashion_Foundation.

NYFW treated me well this year and I'm excited to see what's next (you should be too)!
