PCT Section 5: Washington | Aug 23 - Sept 12, 2026

The final stretch of the PCT. As I write this, I’m home in Seattle, missing trail already. I skipped 198 miles from Snoqualmie to Rainy Pass, and I miss that too. But living so close I’ll be sure to tie up my loose ends next summer.

When I started this hike, one of my main goals was to observe the transitions between natural environments, learn the evolution of the landscapes, connect familiar places with one continuous footpath. Heading into the final stretch with tons of uncertainty due to major fire closures, I was glad to have the first half of the state as part of the long journey. Indian Heaven, Mount Adams and Goat Rocks are all sections I had hiked before, and it was incredible to visit them with greater context and understanding.

In WA, I had my 28th birthday, completed my 24 hour challenge, had 9 of my friends visit and hike with me, and had the best people around me all the while. Part of the melancholy of reaching the end of my continuous footpath was the divergence of hikes after that: the community of this hike is what gives it its legs. I was so lucky that the border opened and I got to see many of my class of 2026 hikers as we all converged at the Terminus. It was special to hike the final days with @philaklein and my @bug.lady.dog. The perfect whimsical cap to a perfect summer.

Day 6 8.1 miles 1490 elevation gain Town Day! Got to the forest service road at 11am for the 1230 shuttle in time for some AMAZING trail magic ✨✨🥪🎂 hung out with thru hikers that were zeroing at Trout Lake, then checked in to my super cute hotel - showered and did laundry resupplied food and gorged myself on pizza and ice cream before my next 6 day adventure 👍🏽👍🏽⛺️

And that’s a wrap on the PCT 🎉

A bit of an anticlimactic ending with the northernmost 300 miles of trail largely closed due to wildfires, including the official terminus. But we rented a car, skipped around the closures, and hiked an alternate to the border!

Made it to Washington! This last stretch has been full of zeros and side quests (PCT trail days, floating the river in Bend, etc). It’s been nice to slow down and savor the last weeks of trail. Just one state left!

OREGON!!! After 3 months and over 1600 miles in California, I’ve never been so excited to cross a state line. Less than 1000 miles to go!

Week seven; mile 625 to 723.

Seven weeks, 700 miles. Cherishing a sunset camp dinner with a near trail crush, bittersweet because our paths were unlikely to cross again. Scrambling up rocks because I can’t help it and I don’t want to lose my scrambling head game. Admiring wide open desert landscapes. Peakbagging the same summit as @wildcowboyrob and Butter, not for the last time. Nero-ing into Lake Isabella on a whim because I desperately craved a reset.

Cramming into highly sought after shade at mile 666 with fellow Canadian, Dan the Milkman. Reaching the 700 mile marker and immediately bursting into tears because something about finishing the desert, the first and longest section of the PCT, had me deeply emotional for days. Hiking into Kennedy Meadows full of cheers and bell ringing, wanting to hold that feeling forever.

Meeting the amazing and hilarious Rockettes, sadly knowing I’d only see them for a couple days before they sped off. Transitioning into the Sierra Nevada, feeling stronger than I should at elevation. One of my favorite camp nights so far, among boulders and a beautiful sunset.

Day 29 on the PCT was not your typical day… as I was already hiking when the clock struck midnight. We suffered through the windy, cold, dark climb up to Mount Tehachapi but the sunrise up there was amazing. Definitely gonna be a PCT core memory for me.

Day 28 on the PCT was a long one… I am attempting to hike 48 straight miles to Tehachapi! Luckily I had my shark on (trail name Landshark) and a buddy to hike with. Made it 24 miles before the strike of midnight today, meaning I have 24 more to do tomorrow.

Three years in the making, I finally made it up Whitney 🏔️

In 2023, a record snow year, snow above 9000’ made our Whitney attempt a lot harder. I made it up to the junction to the summit before I had to respect the turn around time, glissading down the treacherous chute — one of the scariest things I’ve done in my life. See photos 7-9 to get a sense of the conditions.

Now to complete this objective while currently on the PCT was a fever dream. I made it up to the point I’d made it to before sunrise, and watched the sun warm the horizon and the distant peaks. The altitude was rough but I pushed to the summit! Highest peak in the lower 48 ✅
