Great leadership doesn’t start with having all the answers, it starts with listening.

In this episode of Founders Forum, Tom McEvoy shares one of the most valuable skills he developed throughout his global leadership journey: aggressive listening. From corporate leadership to entrepreneurship and nonprofit work, Tom explains why truly understanding people often takes more than one conversation and why leaders need the humility to check their assumptions before acting.

Whether you’re building a company, leading a team, or guiding an organization through change, this is a powerful reminder that progress begins when leaders slow down and really hear what’s being said.

Innovation doesn’t stop once a product hits the market, it often starts there.

In this episode of Founders Forum, Tom McEvoy talks about what happens after people actually begin using what you’ve built. By encouraging contractors through the process, Tom discovered something powerful: once users get comfortable, they start finding new applications the creators never imagined.

From unexpected use cases to a fireproof perimeter fence that wasn’t part of the original plan, this is a reminder that some of the best innovation comes from listening closely to the people using your product. Real progress happens when founders stay open, curious, and collaborative long after launch.

How do you turn decades of corporate experience into something that truly lasts—both in business and in your community?

In this episode of Founders Forum, Marc Bernstein sits down with Tom McEvoy, CEO and Founder of @lumbercon and Founder and Board Chair of the @uptownwc in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

After spending 24 years with Armstrong World Industries—including leadership roles overseas—Tom transitioned into entrepreneurship, helping develop a revolutionary fireproof concrete decking product. At the same time, he turned his focus toward giving back, playing a key role in bringing live performing arts back to his hometown. This conversation explores Tom’s journey from corporate leadership to purpose-driven entrepreneurship, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

From a decade-long research and development process to educating architects and contractors on new materials, Tom shares what it really takes to bring innovation to market. He also reflects on the importance of mentorship, long-term thinking, and the leadership skill he calls “aggressive listening.” The episode wraps with Tom’s vision for the future of both LumberCon and the Uptown Theater—and what legacy means to him as a founder.

Key Takeaways:

✅ Why giving back matters for entrepreneurs
✅ The long road behind LumberCon’s innovation
✅ Introducing new products in traditional industries
✅ “Aggressive listening” as a leadership skill

A safe deck is never optional, it’s the foundation of outdoor living.
Deck Safety Month® (DSM) may be highlighted in May, but safety is a priority every single month.
Thanks to Karli Yeomans of LumberCon for this important reminder!
