The United Kingdom remains the world’s second-largest music export market, even as its share of global on-demand audio streaming slips to 4% in the first half of 2026, according to new data from Luminate.

British music continues to command a significant international audience despite growing competition from emerging streaming markets and the increasing popularity of non-English-language artists.

According to Luminate’s latest music consumption data, U.K. artists accounted for 4% of global on-demand audio streams during the first half of 2026, down from 4.2% in the corresponding period of 2025 and 4.3% in 2024.

The decline represents a 0.3-percentage-point reduction over two years, equivalent to a 7% relative decrease in the country’s global streaming market share.

However, the figures come as worldwide streaming consumption continues to expand, with artists from previously underrepresented markets gaining greater access to international audiences.

“Focusing on that middle market of the music is where the really interesting signal is,” Rob Jonas, CEO of Luminate, expressed to us at Cannes. While the industry may be looking for scale, we look for the audience. By tracking consumers’ listening, we learn that scale is not always the most appropriate metric to measure value. As Jonas states, the middle market holds meaningful value in distinct ways. Thank you Rob Jonas for sharing your keen insights with us.

“People do want to make music. They want to make it in their bedroom. They want people to hear it and there is an audience for it.” — CD Baby president, Molly Neuman, on how the music industry has changed in the age of independent artists.

Neuman joins @wordsbykristin on this week’s episode of Billboard On The Record to discuss the rise of DIY distribution and the 150,000 tracks uploaded to streaming services every day, according to Luminate.

Rappers In Their 20s: By The Numbers 📊

We just published our annual Best Rappers in Their 20s list, which weighs the quality of each artist’s music, its impact (meaning chart success), and their influence on the scene. But how do their streams stack up to their ranking?

Here’s how the list would look if we ranked the artists by their on-demand audio streams in the U.S. so far in 2026, according to @luminate_data. That figure counts plays across all major DSPs and measures how often listeners are actually engaging with their songs.

What does the next phase of growth look like for UK independent music?

At AIM Connected, we brought together voices from across the industry to look at where the opportunities are emerging - at home and around the world.

We caught up with Adrian Serosi, GM & VP International at @luminate_data, following his session on UK music consumption trends, to hear what independents should have on their radar.
