Last week of the most special project, Minimal Legends in the heart of Venice.

For five months, an art built on refusal has found its most unexpected home: the Baroque opulence of the Venetian private residence and foundation of Vincenzo and Claudia Rose De Cotiis. The canonical voices of 1960s Minimalism, curated by Lawrence van Hagen and Claudia Rose, in unprecedented dialogue with the palazzo and Vincenzo De Cotiis's contemporary practice.

@lvh_art × @vdecotiis at the @vincenzodecotiisfoundation

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘Glass Tea House “Mondrian”’ reimagines one of Japan’s oldest architectural traditions through complete transparency.

The tea house is constructed entirely from glass, dissolving the boundaries between architecture, landscape and ritual. Rather than defining space with walls, light, nature and the tea ceremony itself become the architecture.

Sugimoto saw a connection between Piet Mondrian’s abstraction and the aesthetic philosophy of the sixteenth-century tea master Sen no Rikyū, believing that the pursuit of abstraction had begun centuries before Mondrian. As he Sugimoto wrote: “I like to think that this tea house was built by Mondrian after he heard Sen no Rikyū speaking to him through the singing of the birds.”

@lvh_art @lawrencevh

Rediscovering some of these incredible artists last week made me think back to the Venice Biennale in May.

An immense love to @hollisbobolis for taking us on the most special experience of the Sandretto Island in Venice. An island is always a political statement, establishing a boundary, protecting what it contains. For centuries the island of San Giacomo was used exactly for this purpose. Today the same island, in the hands of Patrizia Sandretto and Agostino Re Rebaudengo, transformed into a space for imagination, traversed by art and by the most urgent questions of our time. The utopia that was created was born from a radical reading of the present making visible the insufficiencies of the existing world.

May, elsewhere: Lorna Simpson at Punta della Dogana. Kapoor at Palazzo Manfrin. Boetti and Lee Ufan at SMAC. LVH Minimal Legends, once more and Charlotte Colbert at the Aman.

Artists: Enrico David, Lorna Simpson, Sarah Lucas, Anish Kapoor, Alighiero Boetti, Lee Ufan, Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, Lucas Arruda, Goshka Macuga and Hugh Hayden, Joseph Yaeger, Pol Taburet, Danielle McKinney, Maurizio Nannucci, Jannis Kounellis, Dan Flavin, Charlotte Colbert.
