“George, congratulations on getting into the Chicago International Film Festival!”

Thank you. But CLOSED MOUTHS didn’t get here because of me alone.

It took our cast, crew, post-production team, background actors, friends, family, and a community that believed in this story.

We made this film for $200. People gave their time, talent, and energy because they believed in me and what we were trying to say.

But that kind of community doesn’t happen overnight. It takes showing up for people long before you need them to show up for you.

Attending their screenings. Supporting their projects. Making introductions. Having conversations when there’s nothing to gain. Caring about what other people are building, even when it has nothing to do with you.

Community isn’t just asking people to show up for your dream. It’s showing up for theirs.

That’s what I want Cottage Grove Productions to represent. Not just the films we make, but the relationships we build and the opportunities we help create for one another.

To everyone who helped bring CLOSED MOUTHS to the Chicago International Film Festival: this moment belongs to you, too.

in Closed Mouths, Brianna (Gabrielle Gulledge) gives her brother Brandon (Patrick Agada) money. a small gesture that says something much bigger: i see you. i believe in you. i’ve got you.

it’s the kind of support that often goes unspoken, but can make all the difference when someone is trying to find their way.

this is one of the quiet moments we love about filmmaking. a gesture that might go unnoticed on the first watch can tell you everything about a relationship.

Closed Mouths is premiering at the Chicago International Film Festival tomorrow at 5 PM. premiere tickets are standby only, but you still have opportunities to see the film:

The movie was never just the movie.

Cottage Grove started with a group of filmmakers in Chicago who wanted to tell a story.

But look closer.

You’ll see the actors.
The crew.
The producers.
The people who opened doors.
The people who shared resources.
The people who showed up when there wasn’t much to show up for.

That’s the part people don’t always see.

A film can have a director’s name on it.

But it takes a community to make it.

Cottage Grove was filmed in Chicago in the summer of 2022.

And years later, we’re still seeing what that community made possible.

What started as one film became the foundation for everything we’re building now.

CHICAGO GETS THE FIRST LOOK. 🎬

We made Closed Mouths for under $200 in 2024.

Not because the story was small.

Because a group of people decided it was worth making.

Now, that little film is premiering at the 62nd Chicago International Film Festival as part of the Live Action Short Film Competition—right here in the city where we made it.

That means a lot to us.

Closed Mouths is about a struggling filmmaker racing to submit a competition-winning script in one night while confronting anxiety, self-doubt, comparison, and everything he’s been keeping buried.

But you don’t have to be a filmmaker to understand that feeling.

We’ve all had something we wanted to say.

Something we were afraid to say.

Something we kept inside because we didn’t know how it would sound.

SAY IT ANYWAY.

I’m grateful to our producers @t.j.h.a.r.r.i.s , @author_jordanrivers, @justkeiph , @jadenduenas_ , @kat_blade , @vanbillbob , and @girltype3 —and to every person who gave something to this film.

Photography is central to our work at @bigmouthcreative. It catches the eye, tells a story and creates belonging.

This #WorldPhotographyWeek — a global celebration of imagery — we’re focusing on a Bigmouth partner behind the camera.

@m.lamourt (they/them) proves photography isn’t just one thing. Their work ranges from portraits to conceptual photos to big-name studio productions and, yes, campaign work.

M’s work on @chipublichealth’s Illinois Safe Sleep campaign captures her subjects’ natural humanity, from cozy newborns to doting parents.

“Basic human needs are a point of connection,” they said. “That tends to be the throughline in my work.”
