Last week, we held a dedication to celebrate the 12 community murals we created across all five boroughs this summer, in collaboration with Office of the Mayor, NYC Parks, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, as a part of the 2026 World Cup Activations Events! ⚽️

Big thank you and congratulations to the 12 artists who did an amazing job on creating these beautiful murals and a thank you to the NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura, Kendal Henry from The Department of Cultural Affairs and Elizabeth Masella from NYC Parks for coming to celebrate with us and for their support this summer.

The title of this mural is "The Language of Play," and is about play as a universal language.

Located at Prall Playground in West Brighton, Staten Island.

This is a community mural, informed by community input and brought to life through community support. I had so much support from community for this project. Thank you to everyone who came to help me during this insane summer of painting. Over 100 kids and people of all ages came to our community paint day on July 18th to come help paint the background of the mural (see last slide for some of the cuties) Beyond that, I am eternally grateful for all the additional love n support from talented angels: @jasminegiwah @bymumby @emperatritzz @gabriellefaitharriaga @milomilaonline @stufffrommybrainn @wopiana @terrell.villiers

“These murals will belong to the neighborhoods that brought them to life—from Fordham Heights to Ocean Hill to Laurelton and communities across our city,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Long after the final whistle of the World Cup, kids will walk past these walls and see something their families helped create. Mimi Ditkoff, one of the 12 Groundswell Teaching Artists working with us this summer to create murals as a part of the NYC World Cup Activations, talked to us about her mural design and how the elements represent NYC, Staten Island and the importance of having spaces for people of all ages to play!

She also has had a little member of the community wanting to come and help her paint every day, shoutout Montel!

We had an amazing turnout at our twelfth and final paint day as a part of our 12 community-driven murals across all five Boroughs to celebrate the 2026 World Cup in New York City with The Office of the Mayor, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development!

This final mural will be located at Prall Playground, where the paint day took place, and is designed by Groundswell teaching artist, Mimi Ditkoff, who had kids and adults of all ages getting their hands full of paint and painting all over the mural. Special thank you to the United Activities Unlimited West Brighton Cornerstone (@westbrightoncornerstone ) group and members from On Your Mark (@onyourmarksi ) for painting with us!

ATTN:‼️⚽️ hiii! I need your help! As many of you know, I am painting a mural for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. And I need volunteers!!! I have two amazing mural assistants already (@terrell.villiers & @wopiana ), but we're gonna need all the help we can get. The tragedy of this story, is that my start date was delayed by two weeks, yet my deadline cannot change. Heh..heh... I need to finish this mural by August 31st, and it happens to be 1,200 square feet 😮‍💨. Starting today, I will be on site every day from 9am to 6pm, painting! This is a community mural, informed by community input and the experiences of locals. Now I'm calling on community again, to come be part of something huge.
⭐️If you love to paint, have experience with murals, or just want to help, HMU! ⭐️

My mural is located in Staten Island, so it's definitely a commute! But come :)

WAYS TO HELP:
⭐️Can you paint? hmu to come paint on any day between August 4th and August 31st. Would be awesome if you're a painter or have experience with murals, but still ok if not! Most days I'll have one or two of my assistants with me, but some days I'll have to be alone! So u could change that ;)
⭐️We are hosting a community paint party on August 18th from 12:45 to 2:45. This will be a multigenerational event, where everyone is welcome! You don't have to be an artist to participate :) I'm going to be outlining the mural as a giant paint by numbers, so it will be easy and fun. We'll have snacks and music and the best vibes. Bring your friends, your grandma, your baby, anyone! Have students or a youth group you work with? Invite them to our community paint day. Engage in public art and see its impact.

Panel 1 of 6 of my second mural for PS 270 is done 😮‍💨 I have one more week to finish painting this, and then I start painting a mural for the World Cup 🤯🤯🤯 I am shoooooook and nervous and honored to be selected for this project. My World Cup mural will be painted in Staten Island as part of the NYC World Cup activation sponsored by the Mayors Office. 🫪 #mamdani #ily #worldcup #muralist

For reference...this mural above is going to be 200 square feet, but the World Cup mural will be 1,200 square feet. 😳 If you live in Staten Island (or if u don't but u love me) and you want to help paint, I'll be painting from July 13th to August 31st.

Showing my painting tomorrow at the Mezz at Gotham Bowery 🫂 thank you @gotham.ny for wanting to show this piece! :') honored :') This is a group exhibition of all Queer artists, as part of Gotham's "Gay for Gotham" campaign during Pride month. The opening reception is tomorrow 6-8pm, but my piece will be on display all month, if you want to go see it up close n personal. There also just might be some pretty gay photographs on the walls too, who knows. :) woo! #gay #yay

🌼 Spring Art Share 2026 🌷

Last week, we hosted our Spring Art Share, where families and friends gathered to celebrate the fantastic work made by artists in our Studio After School Programs!

With the help of this semester's teaching artists and our studio programs managers, the artists were given the space, encourgement and guidance to create art relating to social justice topics, community, and personal stories.

Congratualtions to everyone on a wonderful job! 👏🏻
