POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Quick story time. (advisory song got cussin’)

My piece in the F’Reel Show is called“Searching for Black Superman,” is in the F’Reel show, hence the song “Black Superman” by Above the Law.

That song was one of my favorites as a youngn’ - the beat still crazy, but the content was about having to sell drugs to get their people out of poverty. The dope boy as hero.

I remember my parents - who were good and saved - found my rap tapes and thought I was hustling. They kept me late from school one morning and prayed for me. A whole mini intervention. I tried to tell them about the song, but they still hit me with that blessed oil.
That fear they had? That’s what this piece is about.

I used Meteor Man as an entry point - one of the first comedic Black superheroes with powers I know of to hit the big screen - to explore the hero and villain tropes from Black films of the 90s. The War on Drugs was the backdrop, and these films were showing us counter-narratives: father figures, educators, superheroes which is why I collaged movies like Meteor Man, Blade, Blankman, Boyz N the Hood, Higher Learning, South Central as well.

All of these films attempting to give Black boys something other than the dope boy hero we saw celebrated in our hoods - the same ones dominant and popular culture and the system were criminalizing.

These films were deeply personal. They were about us searching for positive images of ourselves in media, something to counter not just our realities, but how we were being seen in visual culture.

I like #collage because of the layers. we found ourselves in fragments. This collage is those fragments.

Make sure to get by @allpeoplearts to check out the show. Many dope artists.

Big thanks to my Brother and the curator @mrdavicr8 for always pushing me to make more art. More art is coming.
