Don’t just track the date your period starts alone. Pay attention to your usual flow, duration, pain and any changes from your normal pattern. Tracking and paying attention can help you recognize when something has changed and give useful information to your healthcare provider.

Know what products work for your flow and keep enough available for your cycle. Pads and tampons should be changed regularly; ACOG recommends changing pads and tampons at least every 4–8 hours, or sooner when needed.

Your vagina doesn’t need to be “freshened” with douches, sprays or scented products. ACOG recommends avoiding douching, perfumes and deodorants around the vulva/vagina and using gentle, fragrance-free care.

If cramps are part of your cycle, know what usually helps you. Heat therapy, dieting, rest, exercise and supplements can help ease menstrual cramps; some people may also benefit from appropriate pain medication when medically suitable (frequent use has negative effect in long run).

If your bleeding suddenly becomes much heavier, your periods become unusually irregular, or pain is severe enough to interfere with normal activities, don’t simply “push through.” For example, needing to change a pad or tampon every 1–2 hours or bleeding for more than 7 days. You need to seek medical attention.

Share this to your best girls ❤️.
