🏆 ABERDEEN WINS — BY A HAIR.

Watch the last minute. That’s how close it was. 😳

Congratulations to Aberdeen Township, winners of the inaugural Great Whaleboat Race of 2026. The Golden Oar goes to Aberdeen — but it might not get comfortable. Mayor Altomonte is already calling for a rematch. 👀

500+ people on the banks of Lake Lefferts. Three towns. First responder crews rowing a race first run 248 years ago.

Matawan’s crew — Mayor Altomonte, Councilman De Zaio, and Taron Jones of the Matawan Fire Department — crossed just a hair behind. What a race.

Thank you to every first responder who rowed, to Mayors Altomonte, Cannon & Araneo for being good sports about being captured, to Keyport and Aberdeen for building this with us, to the Matawan Aberdeen Arts Society, and to every volunteer and neighbor who showed up.

In 1778 Marriner’s raid worked because neighbors came together. Yesterday it worked for the same reason.

Three towns, one lake, and not a single empty stretch of shoreline. We are already looking forward to next year! 🇺🇸🚣

🤝 Want to be part of this? Matawan Historical Society memberships start at $25 individual / $40 family — no residency required, no meeting attendance required. Link in bio to join.

🎃 Next up: Haunted Halloween, Saturday October 24. It sells out every year — follow along so you’re first to know when tickets drop.

Here’s to 250 years — and to that rematch.

I am very excited to announce the formation of the Matawan Aberdeen Arts Society (MAAS). This is a project that I have been very passionate about for many years and I was able to assemble a great group of folks to help it actually get off the ground. Our main goals are town beautification, hosting events and spreading art appreciation-our first act being fixing up the donated boats for the Great Whale Boat Race this Sat in Matawan and we'll have a table there for kids crafts. Please be patient as we get this group going and please follow us so you can stay tuned to what we have going on. Go out and make ART!
