When two of Australia’s best middle-grade authors come together on a writing project, you know it’s going to be something special. The Raven’s Song, by @zanafraillo & @macdibble is a stunning book weaving together their two distinct voices to create a story that will stay with you long after closing the cover. Recently shortlisted in the CBCA book of the year for younger readers, this genre bending book reminded me of a cross between The Day of The Triffids & The Last of Us. It weaves science fiction with eco-fiction, magical realism & a scaryingly accurate dose of reality. 'This is how we have to live now.’ Shelby and her best friend Davy live quiet low-tech lives in a closed community that is made up of exactly three hundred and fifty kind, ethical people living on exactly seven hundred hectares. When they climb through a hole in the perimeter fence to venture into the surrounding jungle, what they find is more astonishing than anything they could have imagined. And when Shelby realises the terrible danger that is unfolding, it will take all of her daring and determination to ensure the past does not repeat itself. The story is told from the two main characters' perspectives – Shelby, who lives in the future after the apocalyptic events of a global pandemic, on the 700 hectares allocated to her community, and Phoenix, who lives in the world 100 years earlier in the late 2020’s, just before disaster struck. Shelby’s chapters are told in 1st person & Phoenix’s in 3rd person. I quickly got into a rhythm with this narrative style & found it helped distinguish their voices, as did the different but complementary writing style of Bren and Zana. The two voices weave perfectly together, beginning quite separated, slowly bumping up against each other delicately, winding and twisting towards the inevitable coming together of the main characters and the past and future, in a perfectly paced narrative that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next, but also lingering on its lyrical magic. 🐝 book review 🐝 Set in an all too possible future, in Australia, bees are mostly extinct, and children and enlisted on farms to pollenate the fruit trees. Our young protagonist Peony dreams of being a bee. She lives with her sister and granddad, while her mum earns money in the city. One day mum arrives home to announce Peony must go to the city to work and her world is torn apart. Peony is a brave, wee girl, who loves her place in the world on the farm. Life is tough but filled with love. Until her mum rips her away. This novel is full of hope, fierce bravery, unwavering loyalty, and genuine kindness. Peony is an incredible character, who wants to make sure she keeps her promises but her ultimate dream is to go back to the farm, to her home. Highly recommend this speculative fiction for middle grade readers. A stark reminder about why we need to care for the smallest helpers on earth - bees and kids alike. A wonderful basket of holiday reading from Lulu & Jazz! These are some amazing books that I've been reading recently which I think would make wonderful holiday reads for you! All of these books have been nominated for various awards! I devoured 'Unnecessary Drama' by Nina Kirkwood, causing more than one raised eyebrow from my students as I laughed my way through a 'silent' reading class! This resonated so strongly with me in terms of starting life afresh in a share house! 'The Museum of Broken Things' by Lauren Draper thoughtfully & skilfully weaves mystery and intrigue into a story of love, longing & loss, of family & friendships. As for 'The Raven's Song', I was compelled by the captivating characters & their plight woven into this intriguing story by Zana Fraillon & Bren MacDibble. 'Mikki and Me and the Out-of-tune tree' by Marion Roberts is my next read. With a fabulous title and a plot that involves characters creating a youtube channel revealing the secret life of trees and a race against time to save a local tree, this should be a great read! #loveozya #loveozmiddlegrade #cbca Books included: 'Unnecessary Drama' by Nina Kirkwood (Text Publishing) Shortlisted, Young Adult, Indie Book Awards, 2023 Longlisted, CBCA Book of the Year, Older Readers, 2023 Longlisted, Best Designed Young Adult Cover, Australian Book Design Awards, 2023 'The Museum of Broken Things' by Lauren Draper (Text Publishing) Shortlisted, Young Adult Prize, The Readings Prize, 2022 Shortlisted, Young Adult, Indie Book Awards, 2023 Longlisted, Kids & YA, Booktopia Favourite Australian Book Award, 2022 Longlisted, CBCA Book of the Year, Older Readers, 2023 'The Raven's Song' by Zana Fraillon & Bren MacDibble (Allen & Unwin) Shortlisted, Book of the Year: Younger Readers, CBCA Awards, 2023, AU Shortlisted, Best Children's Fiction, Aurealis Awards, 2022, AU 'Mikki and Me and the Out-of-tune tree' by Marion Roberts (Allen & Unwin) Notable Book, Book of the Year: Younger Readers, CBCA Awards, 2023, AU Image Description: Four books listed above sitting in a cane basket on a patterned rug.
