The very first Strictly Ballroom show happened 31 years ago today!! It was at The Macondo in LA (and presented by @macondohardcore and @kxlu) w/ @fyp_5yearplan, @lack.of.interest.band, Loomis Slovak, @incurablecomplaint, and One Eyed Richard & the Goddamn Liars (aka Los Cincos). With DJ sets by @deejayhoseh, @djtomas_sf, and Jun. @briantamborello played two sets that night… one with SB and the other with Incurable Complaint.

@chrisgunst and @jimmytamborello were asked about this show in the recently published @yourescenezine Vol. 1. Their recollections are in slide 2. Our buddy, @jimatdeltaco, also noted in our previous post about this show that, “Another band showed up and played that night. They were called Animal Farm and lived out of an old repurposed Pac Bell van. Or maybe I dreamed that.” Pretty sure Jim didn’t dream that. They did in fact play that night… and they did have a van.

It was a crazy show. The dustup that Jimmy mentioned in slide 2 also did happen, but the details are a bit fuzzy all these years later.

B&W photos from our set by @anchored_sf (with lyrics by Chris and Jimmy) Not sure who took the color one. Happy to give credit if anyone remembers.

The time that @magicpail and I went to see Screeching Weasel randomly one day at @macondohardcore We were bored and figured, why not? From memory, Screeching Weasel pulled up to the venue, saw that no one was there, and bailed.
Luckily for us, the almighty KARP also happened to be there and they absolutely SLAYED. I believe this was before they had released any vinyl but they did have this cassette that I snatched up without hesitation.
There was maybe 10 people there I believe and that’s rounding up
