POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last session, we took an important step forward with the passage of comprehensive gun safety legislation. This law cracks down on untraceable “ghost guns,” prohibits devices that convert semiautomatic weapons into automatic ones, updates the definition of assault style weapons, strengthens our red flag laws to help prevent tragedies before they occur, and includes many other provisions that promote public safety while respecting the rights of lawful gun owners.

This progress now faces a new challenge. A referendum to repeal the 2024 law will appear on the ballot this November. I will be voting “YES” on Question 9 in order to uphold the law and preserve the protections enacted to help reduce gun violence and keep Massachusetts community safe.

Some very enthusiastic responses to our VOTE YES ON QUESTION 9 Rally yesterday in Hyannis.

Who would not want to ban ghost guns which are often recovered at crime scenes? Who would not want to expand our red flag laws to help more professionals help people who are in moments of crisis? And why wouldn’t we want to inspect gun dealers the way we do other providers? And why shouldn’t a gun owner know how to properly maintain, store and use their firearm? And of course we want a database that can help us make more sound gun violence prevention policy based on the facts. And we want to maintain our Assault Weapons Ban by keeping current with new technology that should be included in it. These are only a few of the reasons to VOTE YES to save our 2024 Firearms Modernization.

Thanks to Sonya Coleman from Stop Handgun Violence in Boston who made the trip down, the League of Women Voters, Lower Cape Indivisible, and various other advocacy organizations who supported us today. And of course, our members.
Let’s go!!!

The story in the @guardian is worth the read and highlights familicide cases, citing cases in Texas, Iowa and Montana. Can it happen anywhere? Sadly, yes, but we live in a country where firearms outnumber the population and gun ownership and gun deaths are much more common than in other developed countries. These three states, for example, have some of the weakest gun laws in the country!
Reducing access to guns is a proven effective way to prevent such tragedies. Yet Red Flag Laws, which temporarily remove firearms from a person found to be at risk or hurting themselves or others - are being banned in some states - including Iowa, Montana and Texas - as “a violation of Second Amendment rights.”
Here in MA we do have a Red Flag Law as part of the 2024 Firearms Modernization Law. It is a PROVEN method to reduce firearm fatalities. GUN LAWS WORK. Period.

Last week, our team had the privilege of attending the 2026 New England Streetworker Conference at Gillette Stadium alongside more than 400 people representing 120+ organizations across New England.

The day's theme, Community is the Strategy, came to life through powerful conversations, shared learning, and meaningful connections between streetworkers, community violence intervention practitioners, young people, community leaders, and partners dedicated to creating safer, stronger communities.

We're grateful for the opportunity to exchange ideas, build relationships, and continue growing in this important work. A huge shoutout to @utec.inc and all who organized this spectacular day. It was wonderful connecting with so many of our partners!
