October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month — and guns make domestic violence much more deadly. When an abuser has access to a gun, a woman is 5 times more likely to be killed.

When we combine strong gun laws that restrict abusers’ access to guns with robust funding for victims’ support services, we can build safer communities and save lives.

The Coalition is committed to centering domestic violence survivors in our gun violence prevention work. Gun violence prevention is domestic violence prevention — and we can’t end domestic violence without addressing the deadly role of guns.

One year ago, Massachusetts took action and passed its strongest gun safety legislation since 2014.

The Coalition advocated tirelessly with our state and national partners for key policies that successfully made it into the final version of this law. Research shows that strong gun laws like this one save lives - and we are committed to making sure that this lifesaving law is fully implemented.

➡️ Swipe to learn more about key policies contained in this groundbreaking law.

As Suicide Prevention Awareness Month comes to an end, we want to highlight once again that the gun violence crisis in Massachusetts is also a suicide crisis.

Every year, the majority of gun deaths in Massachusetts are suicides. We cannot end gun violence in the Commonwealth without addressing the suicide crisis and the role that guns are playing in it.

How you can take action today:
1. Practice safe storage. Keep all guns unloaded, locked in a secure container, and separate from ammunition.
2. Know your options. Learn about Extreme Risk Protection Orders in Massachusetts at www.maerpo.org.
3. Access resources for yourself and loved ones. Visit www.samaritans.org for Massachusetts-based services and resources.

💜 If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Recently, Coalition staff attended the @utec.inc Streetworker Conference at Gillette Stadium!

We had a blast celebrating the frontline workers who build safer communities every day, while learning about the latest community violence intervention (CVI) strategies that prevent violence and save lives.

For the first time, the Coalition presented a workshop of our own. We explored the intersections of gun culture, masculinity, and gender-based violence, with a focus on how men can prevent violence in their communities. One of the most meaningful conversations concerned the messages men and boys receive from an early age about guns and masculinity — from gendered toys like G.I. Joes to broader cultural messages that market guns as a way to “be a man.”

We are so grateful to the men who shared their thoughts and experiences with us, and to UTEC for holding space for these critical conversations. by @macopgv

Coalition staff were thrilled to join the @yesforasafema campaign on Sunday as Governor @maura_healey announced her endorsement to protect the 2024 gun safety law from repeal!

This lifesaving law bans untraceable ghost guns, expands Extreme Risk Protection Orders to prevent gun suicides and mass shootings, prohibits guns in polling places, and more.

The Coalition played a pivotal role in advocating for this law. Then the gun lobby gathered enough signatures to place a question on the ballot that would repeal it in its entirety. The YES on 9 campaign is fighting to protect this legislation and keep our gun laws strong.

🗣️ This November, vote YES on question 9 to keep this lifesaving law in place!

Coalition staff spent Sunday in community at the @bostonteachersunion Back to School Fair!

We spoke with students, parents, and educators about how gun violence impacts their communities and why we should vote YES on 9 to protect our strong gun safety laws.

Our community whiteboard also asked: What does community safety look like to you?

People shared everything from well-funded afterschool programs, to knowing their neighbors, to leaders who are accountable to their communities. These conversations remind us that the safest communities are the ones with the most resources, and help inform all of our violence prevention work.

Thank you to everyone who came by to say hello and start a conversation! Together, we’re building safer communities that are free from gun violence. 🧡 by @macopgv

🚨 New research alert!

A new study from the @violencepolicycenter finds that states with stronger gun laws and lower gun ownership have lower suicide rates — and that Massachusetts has the third-lowest suicide rate in the country.

Firearms are the most lethal means of suicide and limiting access during moments of crisis is critical to suicide prevention. Massachusetts has multiple laws that serve this purpose, including extreme risk protection orders, permits and licensing, and safe storage laws.
