Ubele in Focus: What You Don’t Always See.

For Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we spent time with @sharonbpeter Programme Coordinator at Ubele, to hear more about what it’s like to live and work with sickle cell — and the work she’s doing to create greater awareness beyond Ubele.

Over the weekend, we joined Sharon at an event hosted through her organisation @cellsofageneration where she screened her documentary exploring experiences of sickle cell and shared her comics @coagcomics

After the screening, we sat down with Sharon to talk about navigating her role at Ubele, running her own organisation, and using her experiences to create spaces where people living with sickle cell can feel seen, heard and supported.

Sharon also shared what she wishes more people understood about living and working with sickle cell:

“The effort it takes to show up can be invisible.”

TONIGHT: The Lifeline Conversations Screening

For Sickle Cell Awareness Month, COAG Comics is taking over the iconic Dugdale Arts Centre for an evening of film, food and important conversations about sickle cell and blood donation. 🩸

Before we screen The Lifeline Conversations this evening, we are bringing together a brilliant panel to start the conversation:

Shane understands first-hand the challenges that come with medical self-advocacy and will engage attendees in an interactive session that will empower them. We will collaboratively explore the state of the health care system, the experience of those with hidden illnesses, and understanding how to take practical action.

This workshop is free to attend and is a safe space for anyone living with sickle cell, chronic pain and hidden illnesses. Carers and supporters are also encouraged to attend.

Last night we witnessed the final curtain of Crescent Cell, Sickle Moon, and we are still feeling it. To have been trusted with the graphic design for a production this powerful, this necessary, is something we will carry for a long time. Nearly 1,500 people across Liverpool and London experienced this world. We are honoured to have played even a small part in bringing it to life.
Endless gratitude to the visionary Mojisola Adebayo for writing it, Gail Babb for directing it, and the Sickle Cell Theatre Collective, Kofi Amankwah, Estella Daniels, and Stephen Hibbs, for building something so urgent and so beautiful. To Tamasha and Associate Producer Layla Chowdhury for producing it with such care. To the incredible cast — Omar Austin, Juliet Agnes, and Alistair Hall, you were extraordinary. And to every collaborator: Miriam Nabarro, Stella Cecil, Kayode Gomez, Annie-Céléste Taylor, Tunji Falana, Shane Telemacque, Dawn Estefan, this was a collective act of love.

Softness. Honesty. Creative release.

Last month I had the honour of facilitating a spoken word poetry workshop for the sickle cell community at the Museum of London Docklands, in partnership with @akanji.studio and @myfriendjenintl

We breathed.
We wrote.
We turned lived experience into language.

From acrostic poems to odes to our bodies, to a collective fold-and-pass piece that gave us literal chills — the room was filled with courage, tenderness and truth.

Spaces like this remind me that healing doesn’t always look clinical.

Sometimes it looks like storytelling.

Sometimes it sounds like your voice shaking — and speaking anyway.

We are more than our pain.
We are more than our diagnosis.
Our story matters. 🤍
