Most days, this is what marine science actually looks like:

Not a boat full of cameras. A folded towel, a syringe, steady hands, and an animal that needs to be handled quickly, gently, and correctly.

Julianna Acuña does this kind of fieldwork, and back at the University of Arizona — a landlocked state — she curates the largest stickleback fish collection in the country. Sends specimens to researchers nationwide for genetic studies, gets them back, returns them to the collection.

Different animals, same instinct: build the infrastructure other people's research depends on.

That's Julianna Acuña's actual advice, not a platitude — here's a great place to start:

1. Tide pool carefully.
2. Report injured animals.
3. Volunteer your time.
4. Join (or start) a beach cleanup.
5. Contact your elected officials
6. Vote (that one's mine)

None of those require a degree. They require showing up.

🦭🌎🌊Can humans and wildlife coexist?

During my Marine & Community Conservation Externship through @externhq in collaboration with @natgeo & @nature_org I developed an interactive project exploring negative human-wildlife interactions and how we can encourage coexistence while still allowing people to experience and appreciate these places.

I wanted to make my final project presentation video more accessible, so I decided to turn it into a Reel and share it here! Please share it with others to help spread awareness about the topic!!

This 4-minute video gives you an introduction to the project and the ideas behind it, but there is so much more to explore. The full project is an interactive website designed for you to travel through and explore at your own pace.

Eight weeks. 100 externs from around the world. One shared mission: using storytelling to inspire community involvement in marine conservation.🌊🦭🌎🦈

I'm excited to share "A Coast Worth Protecting: Where People & Wildlife Meet," the interactive StoryMap I created through @externhq in partnership with @natgeo and @nature_org

Growing up in the Sonoran Desert, summer family trips to San Diego as a child sparked my dream of becoming a marine biologist. Visiting La Jolla Cove and the Children's Pool for the first time last fall, then returning this spring with the chair of @sdsealsociety and an amazing volunteer docent gave me a deeper understanding of the people, wildlife, and conservation challenges this coastline holds. It inspired me to help tell its story.

Through research, interviews, community voices, and storytelling, I created this project to raise awareness and show that anyone can make a difference, even from a landlocked state like Arizona.

I'm honored to have been selected as a Final Presenter for my cohort, The Deep Divers, sharing my StoryMap alongside 12 inspiring externs who all shared impactful stories happening within their communities.

A special thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, especially @macsuofa at @uarizona . Many of the wildlife photos featured throughout the StoryMap were captured by our members during educational field trips to San Diego. Thank you to my fellow externs, our mentors, and the teams at @natgeo , @nature_org , and @externhq for making this experience unforgettable.

How can people and wildlife better share the coast of La Jolla? 🌊

I am currently conducting research through the Marine & Community Conservation Externship with the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy, focusing on human-wildlife interactions in La Jolla, California.

Through this project, I am exploring community perspectives on marine conservation issues such as wildlife disturbance, tourism impacts, and public awareness.

If you are a San Diego local, have visited La Jolla, or care about marine conservation, I would greatly appreciate your input through my survey.

Woman in Ocean Science '26 🪸🦈🐚🌊👩🏽‍🔬🧜🏽‍♀️ Pt. 2 of 2 Photo Credits 📸: @silhouettephototucson || Throughout my 4 years of undergrad I have had the absolute privilege of experiencing so many opportunities that I never thought would be possible.

However, one extremely important part of my time at the U of A was being involved within the Marine Awareness & Conservation Society (@macsuofa). It was through this club that I found my own special community of like minded people.

I have had the absolute privilege of serving MACS as President & Vice President this academic year. While I am emotional I am proud of all of the work our organization has done up untill now.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I have had so many other incredible experiences that have changed my life in ways I could not imagine.

The Summer I Became a Marine Biologist in the Desert 🦈🌊🎓 Pt.1 of 2 Photo Credits 📸: @silhouettephototucson || I am so incredibly proud to announce that I will be graduating from the University of Arizona (@uarizona) with a Bachelor's of Science in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology with minors in Marine Science, Biochemistry, and Molecular & Cellular Biology!

I am also excited to announce that after I graduate, I will be continuing my work in the Alaska Freshwater Fish Collection as a Lab Research Technician and will be taking time off to focus on research full time before heading to get my PhD in Marine Biology!!!
