Today's SOUNZ Film features the @nzymphonyorchestra performing @maddypcmusic's gorgeous and reflective 'New Mountain'. This work portrays a moment of grief at Matariki, when we are encouraged to acknowledge those lost in the previous year. Listen for the bursts of light and sound in the orchestra's swells up and down, going from introspection and loss to the promise and hope of a new year. Full film on our YouTube channel, at the link in our bio 🎥 Recorded as part of the 2024 NZ Composer Sessions. Audio by David Houston for RNZ Concert. Filmed by Chris Watson for SOUNZ. Film funded by @nz_on_air.

And just like that, it’s over! The past few months have been filled with challenges however I have had the most phenomenal team to face them with and as a result - we’ve pulled off an incredible show! A massive thanks to the rest of the creative team - @samohtneb and @cadynemarie, the wider production team @tomacklin and @emmamoreynz, and then @taierimusical for trusting me with the musical elements of this show. I was privileged to work with the most insanely talented band - @sc0tt_ke_, @jakirabrophy, @maddypcmusic 🦕, @stevenmcnultyphotos, @justinejustinepierrepierre, @samvanbetuw, and Che Long. You guys played your hearts out, sometimes while on elevated platforms that were getting pushed onstage - something that was was definitely not in the contract! The technical elements in this show were a step up from anything I’ve been involved with before - thank you to all of the crew and cast involved in getting the band on and off stage. None of us fell off so what more could you really ask for! You can’t have a show like this without an incredible cast - you are all some pretty talented people. Not only did you memorise page after page of music but you also were happy to roll with the uhh small differences between our scores which kept everyone on their toes. I hope you all had as much fun learning this show as I did teaching it! Definitely couldn’t have done this show without the massive amount of support from my family and friends and getting to do another show with both @kylamullen and @amelia_leaper6 was a massive highlight! More SamCam™️ content to come so stay tuned for several hours of hair flicks!

The Dunedin Concerto Competition's 'Finalists Concert' on Saturday, 27 May, 7.30pm at the Dunedin Town Hall will contribute greatly to Aotearoa's NZ Music Month. In the first half of the concert, the Dunedin Youth Orchestra will perform three brand new very recent works composed here in Aotearoa : John Rimmer's 'Waitaki Reflections', Grace Shaw's 'Heroica' (world premiere) and Maddy Parkins-Craig's 'Canvas Bags Won’t Save Us' (world premiere). Come along to support these new compositions and our young musicians in Ōtepoti Dunedin! #dunedinconcertocometition2023 #dunedinconcertofinalistsconcert2023 #aratoi
